A Mossad Operation Against Cancer
There is, of course, no Mossad operation against cancer. But there is something about the way Israel approaches complex operations that may offer an unexpected lesson for one of medicine’s most difficult challenges.
A successful operation is rarely built around one person or one technology. Every element is critical. It begins with identifying the critical target or vulnerability. Then comes understanding the environment, bringing together people with different skills, developing the necessary tools, anticipating what could go wrong, and patiently waiting until all the pieces are ready to come together. Each step has to work in coordination with the others.
Cancer demands this kind of thinking and execution.
Consider glioblastoma, a form of brain cancer. First, we need to identify the biological target that matters. Second, we need to develop the right therapeutic weapon to attack it. Third, we need to deliver that weapon to the tumor. In glioblastoma, this means overcoming the blood-brain barrier, which prevents the vast majority of drugs from reaching the brain.
But even if the treatment reaches the tumor and destroys it, the operation is not over. Microscopic cancer cells can infiltrate the surrounding margins and escape the initial attack. Some may develop resistance and become harder to eliminate. Others may survive within an immunosuppressive environment that protects them from the body’s defenses. A successful strategy therefore has to anticipate what may escape, determine how it can be found, and have a backup plan.
Cancer research deserves and requires the same type of strategy and precision execution as a Mossad operation.
For a challenging cancer like glioblastoma, that means bringing together the biologists who understand the disease, the clinicians who understand the patient, the chemists and other experts who can develop the therapeutic weapon, specialists who can solve the delivery problem, and drug-development experts who can determine how the entire strategy can become a medicine. These capabilities cannot operate in isolation. They need to be assembled around the same objective and work together from the beginning.
The objective is not to make science less curious or less creative. It is to make problem-solving more deliberate and precise.
Perhaps defeating cancer needs to be approached like a Mossad operation: identify the critical target, develop the right weapon, find a way to deliver it, anticipate what may escape, prepare for what comes next, and patiently bring all the necessary elements together at the right time.
