A Palestinian state and us –The new future

During the past few days, our Premier, our Defense Minister and our Foreign Minister have all told us there will never be a Palestinian State. This, after their government accepted the American twenty (or twenty-two point) plan to end the war in Gaza, in which one of the points specifically mentions a Palestinian State! And later today in New York, the Security Council will vote on a resolution presented by the United States, which again specifically mentions the creation of a Palestinian State in the “future”. We already know that other members of the Security Council- Russia and China, as examples, may want to change the American proposal.

The bottom line of all of this activity is that there will be a lot of international interest in the creation of a Palestinian State in the near future. And one of its main champions will be our best friend, President Donald Trump!

Unless our leaders have lost all sense of reality, the dream of the far right, of annexing Judea and Samaria, as part of the State of Israel is over after almost sixty years (since June 1967).

The time has come for our leadership, which hopefully will change in the coming year to realize that what we should be doing now, is negotiating the best possible agreement, with all those countries who will be involved in the future of this area.

We have neglected plans for negotiations to separate from the Palestinian Arabs for almost six decades. It is time to realize that our goal in the next few years is to negotiate a settlement which will leave us not only as a Jewish (and I emphasize the word -Jewish), democratic state but as a Jewish, democratic and SECURE state. This means demanding conditions that will leave Israel secure, e.g., demilitarization of the Palestinian State, defendable borders and the right to act in our self-defense. It is time for all of us on the right, left and center to come together and we can do that under the new political conditions, which are about to come into existence in the near future. There should be no real reason why Yair Golan and Naftali Bennett and Matan Kahane cannot sit in the same government once the goal of the “greater Israel” in no longer practical.

It is time to think past Bibi and Ben Gvir and the Hasidic parties and to think about the future of all of our children and grandchildren in the new world which is about to begin-perhaps even tonight in New York!
