A Prayer for Healing after Highland Park, IL

A Prayer for Healing after Highland Park, IL; by Rabbi Bryan Wexler

God of mercy and hope, you are “close to the brokenhearted and helper of those crushed in spirit” (Psalm 34:19). And today our hearts are breaking, God, as our country buries innocent souls yet again.

Yesterday tragedy struck Highland Park, IL. Before that it was Uvalde, Buffalo, and on, and on, and on. The loss is overwhelming. The reality is terrifying. “Ad Matai Reshayim?” How long will those who commit evil continue to do so? Gun freedoms in our nation have resulted in so many losing their freedom to live full lives. Give us strength God. Work through us, created in Your image, to turn our helplessness into action, to stand up against violence and hatred, and to help restore justice, kindness, and peace to our beloved country.

God of nehama, send comfort and support to the bereaved.

God of refuah, send healing to the injured and strength and wisdom to those entrusted with their care.

God of shalom, send peace to our country; a country that finds itself sick from division, hatred, and uncontrolled unfathomable violence.

Mi shebeirakh avoteinu: Avraham, Yitzhak, v’Yaakov, v’imoteinu: Sarah, Rivka, Rahel v’Leah, God of berakha, together, may we bring blessings and healing to one another and to our country.

Where there is darkness, may we shine light. W

here there is discord, may we strive for peace.

Where there is injustice may we fervently pursue justice.

Where there is hate, may we insist on love.

And let us all say, Amen.
