Airbnb and Service animals: Are they violating the law?
According to Airbnb policy, their hosts must accept a service animal into their homes even if they don’t allow pets.
Sadly very few Airbnb hosts follow the law (Americans with Disabilities Act). If you mention a service dog before booking the room, they will turn you away. If you just show up at the residence with a service animal with no warning, The host will cancel your reservation and leave you standing outside in the cold.
When you notify Airbnb of the discrepancy they will take a week to investigate your claim. If it is found to be accurate, they will inform you that the host is no longer allowed to host guests until they agree to the policy. In the meantime, the person who booked the reservation is left outside standing in the cold. Airbnb does nothing to compensate the stranded guest, and it can take a week to ten days for to receive a full refund. There also is no help offered to find the disabled guest somewhere else to stay.
What can a potential Airbnb Guest do? Nothing except hope you can find an attorney to represent you in a civil suit.
