Are We Masters over Ourselves?

Are We Masters over Ourselves?

Torah Portion Balak  (Numbers 22:2 – 25:9)

Are we masters over ourselves?

It all depends to whom we are listening.

How can we be a blessing to ourselves,

And to others, rather than the opposite?

Who is silencing whom into submission?

Are we messengers, spokespersons, scribes,

Listening to the voice of conscience,

Or, do we follow the desires of our hearts,

Or eyes, rather than Divine truth, given our souls?

Betrayal takes an instant of guard put down,

Rather than mastery over a staff held firm.

Otherwise, a forthright zealot appears

For the immorality left unrestrained.

One, that could have been remedied from within,

With self-control, rather than attacked from without.

The choice is ours!
