Bereishit: Light, Life, and Courage
Bereishit begins with God bringing light into the void, separating day from night, shaping the earth, the sky, and all living creatures. From the very start, creation is about turning chaos into order, possibility into life, and potential into responsibility. Humans, made in God’s image, are entrusted to care for this world and for one another.
This week, as hostages are reunited with their families, we see a remarkable moment of light and joy. For many, this is their first Shabbat together in two years—a true gathering of life and hope after unimaginable hardship. Laughter fills the air, families share stories, and the Shabbat table becomes a symbol of resilience and gratitude. It is a moment of relief that reminds us of the power of life, love, and persistence.
Yet the situation remains grave. Not all hostages have been released; as of October 17, 2025, 19 Israeli hostages remain unaccounted for, and the threat from Hamas continues. Bereishit reminds us that while we celebrate light, we must remain vigilant, protective, and proactive in securing life and justice.
We honor these lessons by holding onto hope, fighting antisemitism wherever it arises, supporting Israel, and taking concrete steps to protect those still in danger. Moments like this Shabbat dinner remind us that light can break through darkness, and life can flourish even amid ongoing challenges.
