At the beginning, the United Nations had two antagonistic political groups: the cohort of countries leading by United States was in the state of cold war with the followers of former Communist Soviet Union.
The situation had changed with the decolonization process from mid-1950s to 1980s, which led to the increase of UN membership and, consequently, to the formation of the third bloc of countries of Non-Aligned Movement (NAM). The new group was composed of states with anti-Western ideology and included many Muslim countries. This NAM bloc had shifted the UN’s orientation towards Arab Israeli conflict and is consistently promoting the Arab’s grievances against Israel.
The power and influence of the anti-Israeli NAM bloc was evident by its ability to get an invitation for the Palestinian Liberation Organization (PLO) to UN General Assembly. PLO leader, Yasser Arafat, made a speech to the UN General Assembly on November 13, 1974, the honor and privilege granted to the heads of states and to the Pope Paul VI in 1965.
In his speech, Yasser Arafat, condemned Zionism as an idea : “Zionism is an ideology that is imperialist, colonialist; it is profoundly reactionary and discriminatory”. He had empathy for the European Jews who “were transformed into the instruments of aggression” and “that Jews must alienate themselves from communities or nations of which they have been a historic part”. Mr. Arafat conveniently omits the fact that these European nations allowed the Holocaust, the slaughter of six plus millions of their Jewish countrymen.
When reading the speech of Yasser Arafat to UN General Assembly, its content reminds the front-page stories from newspaper ‘Pravda’, the official publication of Communist party of former Soviet Union. It was identical to this news organ’s ideological vitriol towards Israel and Western democracies. It felt as if the Arafat’s speech was written by the same authors who contributed to the lead stories for ‘Pravda’, and most probably, it was.
KGB (Komitet gosudarstvennoy bezopasnosti) was the former Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (USSR) main security agency from 1954 to the country’s dissolution in 1991. It was a powerful organization with unlimited financial and other resources.
The Liberation Theology movement was an outcome of the super-secret disinformation program approved by the highest authorities of the Communist party of USSR and was implemented by KGB. The purpose of the Liberation Theology movement was to create entities which will undermine and eventually overturn the legitimate governments of countries alighted with the Western free world.
Ion Mihai Pacepa, the highest-ranking defector from former Communist Eastern Bloc, was a lieutenant general of the Securitate, the secret police of the Socialist Republic of Romania, an organization working in close cooperation with KGB.
Mr. Pacepa was entrusted with KGB’s ‘personal file’ on Arafat. It reveals that Arafat was an Egyptian bourgeois who was converted by KGB to Marxism. “First, the KGB destroyed the official records of Arafat’s birth in Cairo, replacing then with fictitious documents saying that he had been born in Jerusalem and was, therefore, a Palestinian by birth. The KGB had trained him at its Balashikha special-ops school east of Moscow and in mid-1960s decided to groom him as the future PLO leader”. According to Mr. Pacepa, the KGB asked Arafat to proclaim war on American ‘imperial-Zionism’ in 1969, the Moscow’s interpretation of the Protocols of the Elders of Zion, fitting well with Soviet’s Communists goal to stir up hatred against Jews and Israel.
Vasli Mitrokhin was a senior KGB archivist who defected to United Kingdom (UK) in 1992. He had copied secret KGB documents by hand for many years and gave this chronicle of KGB’s activities to UK’s security agency.
As per the information provided by Vasli Mitrokhin, Mahmoud Abbas who took over the leadership of PLO after the death of Yasser Arafat in 2004, was recruited as an agent of KGB in Damascus in 1980s.
Beside fulfilling duties of the KGB agent, Abbas was used by the Soviets to spread anti- Israeli propaganda. While attending a Moscow university in 1980s, where KGB had power and influence, he was writing a doctoral dissertation titled ‘Western Imperialism and Zionism’. The essence of this falsified work was to deny Holocaust and accuse Jews of assisting Hitler.
United Nations are adopting biased anti-Israeli resolutions disproportionately to other countries. This pattern of discrimination against the Jewish state continues up to the present. UN Watch highlights the shameless hypocrisy of United Nations: “The UN General Assembly rebuked Israel today in three separate resolutions concluding the world body’s 2024 activity with a total of 17 resolutions that single out the Jewish state, compare to a total of 6 on the rest of the world combined”.
To face the reality, reformation of the United Nations (UN) into an objective and productive entity is not in the near future. By meantime, the state of Israel is sending to UN its representatives to fight the repugnant bias.
