Bibi repeats Shamir’s mistake

When Yitzhak Shamir was Israel’s prime minister, he supported giving Palestinians self-autonomy.

When Moshe Katsav, who was then Minister of Transportation, visited the Lubavitcher Rebbe, the Rebbe told him that self-autonomy can lead to independence. (And a Palestinian independent state is a danger to Israel’s security.)

The Rebbe said, that he helped bring Shamir to power, but if he continued to support Palestinian self-autonomy, then he would work to bring Shamir out of power.

Shamir didn’t listen to the Rebbe. He soon found himself out of power.

Netanyahu is repeating the same mistake. At the dinner with Trump in Washington, Netanyahu said: “The Palestinians should have all the powers to govern themselves, but none of the powers to threaten us. That means full security control will always remain in our hands.”

To his credit, Bibi has (together with Smotrich’s and Ben Gvir’s firm conviction) ruled out giving away land for a Palestinian state. But he also needs to be firmly against Palestinian self-autonomy.

He needs to remember the Rebbe’s message to Shamir.
