Brought to us as a horrifying idea, I will show this proposal to be more democratic than one person, one vote [gasp]. Yes, we all have sacred cows but nothing should be too taboo to be thought about afresh.
When demonstrably, some sections of the population are, for any reason at all, underrepresented in voting, why not make the voting representative? Let every voter pick their main identity. When those are underrepresented, votes are weighed unequally until it’s fair again.
So, it doesn’t matter if certain voters’ groups are bullied out of voting, are too poor, too drunk, blocked by bigoted voting rules, etc.
Then the election is determined for 53% of the women’s vote, etc.
Like politicians have a deadline to register as a candidate or a party, voters should have a chance to volunteer one identity that’s not mentioned yet. Ethnicity, religion, gender identity, class background.
Yet, there must be a limit to how much more a vote will be counted. If I’m the only one who mainly identifies Dutch, and there are 30,000 ex-Dutch Jews in Israel, it can’t be that my vote counts 30,000 times. So, let’s say that the factor can maximally be 10. That should be enough to elevate to equality, every oppressed group in Israel, except kids.
Talking of kids, in modern divorce procedures, it can be that kids get a lawyer pleading for their interests. We need a Kids’ Party (the Dutch have an Animal Party in parliament), to give their interests a voice too.
That’s the end of minority rule that has plagued all democracies!
Yes, again, the elites will be terrified to lose control. Just as after the workers were allowed to vote, and women, Blacks, refugees, youths.
Think about it. Is there anything more democratic?!
