Book of Creation
The Ramban calls the Book of Bereishit, ספר יצירה, the Book of Creation. The first book of the Torah discusses the creation of the world, as well as a description of the lives of the Patriarchs, Abraham, Isaac and Jacob.
Rav Asher Weiss pointed out that the lives of the Avot, was also a type of creation. They created the destiny of their descendants. They invented the moral strength to stand up against spiritual and material hardships. Their deeds were for the sake of the entire world until the end of time. Their merit stands on our behalf for all time.
Avraham Avinu’s willingness to enter the fiery furnace of Nimrod showed great resolve and faith.
He taught how to gain the strength to risk their lives for the sake of sanctifying Hashem’s Name.
This was seen by Chana, who sacrificed her seven sons. She told her seventh son to tell Avraham when they would meet in Heaven, that her ability to make such sacrifices was learned from him.
Yitzchak demonstrated incredible faith when he allowed himself to be bound on the altar. He was thirty-seven years old at that time. He instilled martyrdom in his descendants.
Yakov’s life set the example of survival in the exile. He demonstrated how to overcome the physical threat to our survival in his dealings with Eisav. He demonstrated overcoming the spiritual threats in dealing with Lavan.
As we begin the cycle of reading the Torah once again, we should view the “beginning” as to how the foundations were established for our survival in the darkest of times. Our Patriarchs led the way to give us the tools to meet all challenges.
