Confirming election legitimacy – what is at stake?

The 2020 United States election has left me quite concerned. It is not just the divisions which have created a chasm between friends and family, but being left with the haunting feeling that there is nowhere which is a safe space, untainted and uncorrupted.

In the past, reports of illegal voting, double voting, voting without identification, dead people voting… have somehow been rationalized as tolerable. We were told that different states had the right to create their own standards (or lack of them), and we needed to accept that. It made no sense that in a Federal election, the criterion for placing a critical vote such as this, could vary…but indeed it does.

If the voting process for the President of the United States is not pure, everything is unhinged. The only way the losers of any election can live side by side with the winners… is with the complete belief that the will of the people has clearly and honestly been determined according to the constitution of the Untied States.  Is that such a shocking requirement?

Israel, which has a population of 8.8 million people has an election process which is sacrosanct. No I.D. = no vote. A citizen can only vote where he is assigned to vote. All voting places are monitored by members of different parties to stave off corruption. Citizens living outside the country do not have a vote unless they want to return home to place it. In a country of multiple parties, whatever the messy process of coalition building may be, the core credibility of the voting process is intact.  This is democracy 101…  basic for the survival of a nation state.

Third world nations …dictatorships… banana republics…  allow fraudulent activities in order to impose their power.

For some time now, it has become apparent that the United States of America is not at all united. States have become nations in and of themselves. California, as an example,  has a population of almost 40 million people. It is a country unto itself with its own rules, controlling families and economy.  Its population is greater than that of Iraq, Canada, Poland, Morocco, Saudi Arabia, North Korea, Australia… and larger than about 190 nations in the world all-told. This is indicative of a new reality where the proverbial tail is wagging the dog.  A state of this size can ignore Federal dictates, proclaim itself a haven for illegal immigrants — a sanctuary state… and the rule of Federal law dissolves. Many states have followed suit. This is mentioned solely as an example of the devolution of order in a system which has worked beautifully since May 13, 1865 which was the conclusion of the Civil War… known also as “the war between the states.” Are we headed back in time?

We all want our candidate to win.  We all think that we have the answers for our nation’s future. We do not however have the right to undermine the core concepts of democracy to impose our views.

Not allowing bi-partisan teams of vote watchers, as required by law, to view the recording of each vote is a violation of the highest order. The dumping of ballots, stealing of ballots from mail boxes, the printing of excess ballots, and allowing illegal ballots to be counted would not just change results, but could destroy the collective soul of America.  Then there are the accusations of algorithm  tampering with the computers which recorded the votes….

It is good that President Trump is taking his case to the Court systems both State and possibly Federal. I am not saying that because I want him to win. I am saying this because it is crucial that 100 percent of America… and the rest of the world…. Knows beyond a doubt,  that the election of the president of the most powerful nation on earth was an honest process. Without that, America loses her moral credibility on absolutely everything.

The only Federal entity which appears to be relatively untainted is the Supreme Court. There are those who feel that even some of the justices there have become political players. That should not be, but we all must face the possibility.  We must hope that the State courts are also independent. In the past we would have been comfortable with the FBI investigating, but even that is no longer an unbiased and reliable arm of government.

If after the presentation of evidence, the Supreme Court determines that there has been voter fraud in specific states, the only way to restore faith in a crumbling system will be not a recount… but a totally new vote in voting booths, with no possibility of fraudulent intervention.  It was good enough in the past.  It is more important now that ever.

As in other areas of our lives, technology has outpaced our ability to control it. If in fact these Dominion voting machines have been designed to create fraudulent results, it is another indication that while the creators of technology can control it to their own benefits, it takes years before the public understands how it has been impacted. Neither Congress nor the people at large can begin to deal with the misuse of technology …be it through the spreading of terrorism, bullying, or hatred of those unlike ourselves.  Or be it through identity theft, financial theft, or the theft of your democratically government guaranteed vote.

COVID-19 cannot be an excuse for the crumbling of a nation such as the United States founded on respect for the individual. Conspiracy theorists will say that Covid was released in order to create chaos. I don’t subscribe to such Machiavellian beliefs, but that does not change the fact that it has created opportunity and excuses for corruption to thrive. Everyone benefits if this is faced with non-partisan fury. How dare anyone or any ideology undermine the rule of law?  The law is all that binds a nation together. With trust in the systems created, America has always survived the election of one candidate or another. Without it, the violence which has been fomented recently will explode and all dreams will be shattered.

The process is more important than the conclusion.  American elections must represent clarity, honesty and civility or all will truly be lost.
