Dear the Knesset and IDF Leadership, Sexism is a National Security Threat
Dear Chief of the General Staff and Honorable Speaker of the Knesset
I write as an American-Israeli medical anthropologist and naturopathic doctor who has dedicated years to advancing innovative frameworks for peace and security in the region, including the Oasis 1 Project—a civilian-sourced blueprint for Gaza reconstruction submitted to the IDF Strategic Division in November 2023. For reference, my original proposal is detailed in this public article: The Oasis 1 Project: Security Zones Created for Industry, Integration, and the Shared Common Good. This work underscores my commitment to Israel’s long-term security through inclusive, evidence-based strategies.
Today, I address a profound and urgent national security vulnerability: systemic sexism within the IDF, which not only undermines the contributions of female soldiers but also played a demonstrable role in the catastrophic intelligence failures leading to the October 7, 2023, Hamas attack. This toxic culture of gender discrimination, hypersexualization, and dismissal of female testimony—rooted in outdated religious and cultural biases—represents an unacceptable risk to Israel’s defense apparatus. It must be eradicated immediately through comprehensive reform.
The tragedy of October 7, which claimed over 1,200 lives, exposed this flaw in stark relief. Female surveillance soldiers (tatzpitaniyot) in the Border Defense Corps, stationed at observation posts along the Gaza border, issued repeated warnings in the months prior about unusual Hamas activity, including training exercises, raids on mock tanks, and hostage simulations. These young women—entrusted with the critical role of “eyes and ears” for national security—were dismissed as hysterical, imaginative, or unreliable, and their reports were deprioritized by 40% compared to those of their male counterparts, according to the State Comptroller’s 2024 report on intelligence lapses. One soldier told Haaretz: “If the soldiers had been male, things would have looked different.” This was no isolated oversight; it reflects a broader pattern where female testimony is undervalued, influenced by religious doctrines that question women’s credibility and a military culture that hypersexualizes them as “toys and playthings” on male-promoted IDF X and TikTok pages.
In the year leading up to October 7, morale in these border units was reportedly low, exacerbated by rampant harassment—one-third of female IDF soldiers experienced sexual assault or misconduct, per the 2023 State Comptroller report. Despite their rigorous training and proven capability, these women were discarded as “girls having fantasies,” their warnings buried amid a toxic environment of abuse and bias. Why were they assigned such vital responsibilities only to be ignored? This failure—potentially the greatest in Israel’s history—stems from bigotry embedded in IDF training, the rabbinate’s influence, and unchecked cultural norms that treat female soldiers as second-class. Sexism is not a “side issue”; it is a national security threat with a body count.
I demand the following immediate actions:
- Serious Review of IDF Treatment of Female Soldiers: Conduct an independent, transparent audit of harassment, promotion disparities, and morale in intelligence and border units, with public reporting within 90 days.
- Complete Overhaul of Training and Biases: Eliminate religious and cultural prejudices against female testimony from all IDF curricula, rabbinate guidelines, and operational protocols. Mandate anti-bias training emphasizing the equal credibility of highly trained female soldiers.
- Full Inquiry into Pre-October 7 Unit Dynamics: Launch a Knesset-led investigation into the Gaza border observation units’ environment in 2022–2023, including morale surveys, harassment logs, and the dismissal of female warnings. All records must be declassified where possible.
- Open Hearings for Accountability: Summon IDF brass who dismissed these warnings to public Knesset hearings. Name them, examine their decisions, and impose consequences to prevent recurrence.
Israel cannot afford another intelligence failure born of prejudice. The valor of these women demands justice, reform, and respect. I urge you to act decisively—for their sake, and our nation’s security.
Sincerely,
Dr. Whimsy Anderson ND
