Failure of Progressivism to American Jews
“The Goldene Medine”—the Golden Land. That’s what European Jews called America in Yiddish. To speak of immigrating to America was to speak of redemption: a land without pogroms, a land of safety, dignity, and possibility. A land where Jews could prosper, where their children could grow up free—not merely physically free, but spiritually and intellectually unshackled.
For nearly two thousand years, Jews endured life in Europe. Life under poverty, persecution, and constant fear. Government-sanctioned pogroms were not anomalies—they were policy. In that dark context, America was a miracle. No other country in history had offered a promise like the one enshrined in George Washington’s letter to the Jews of Newport, Rhode Island:
“The Citizens of the United States of America have a right to applaud themselves for having given to mankind examples of an enlarged and liberal policy…It is now no more that toleration is spoken of, as if it was by the indulgence of one class of people, that another enjoyed the exercise of their inherent natural rights…May the children of the stock of Abraham, who dwell in this land, continue to merit and enjoy the good will of the other inhabitants…while every one shall sit in safety under his own vine and fig tree, and there shall be none to make him afraid.”
No such letter was written in Poland, Russia, Germany, or France. No king or pope ever dared articulate such a truth—that the Jew is not a tolerated guest, but an equal citizen.
And yet, somehow, we’ve squandered that gift.
American Jews—descendants of those who fled the burning synagogues of Europe have become the most self-alienated, self-denying Jewish community in history. The same people who survived centuries of exile and genocide, who clung to their identity against all odds, lost it all somewhere between Ellis Island and suburban New Jersey.
The greatest tragedy in this process? The ideological castration inflicted by the Reform and Conservative movements. Reform Judaism the flagship of Jewish self-erasure—redefined Judaism not as a covenant, not as a people, not even as a faith, but as a flavor of progressive ethics loosely dressed in Hebrew.
Its bastard offspring, Conservative Judaism, offered only a half-hearted middle ground: “not too religious, not too secular” a movement whose only real doctrine is ambivalence. Together, these movements facilitated the seamless merger of Jewish identity with leftist politics, erasing Torah, Zion, and memory in favor of universalist sloganeering and intersectional theater.
And so American Jews became the most blindly loyal voting bloc for liberal parties everywhere. Whatever the platform, however antithetical to Jewish survival, they supported it with reflexive fervor.
By 2016, the damage was plain. The election of Donald Trump—an opportunity for Jews to negotiate for security, alliance, and influence was met with hysteria. Instead of political leverage, they offered virtue signals. Instead of alliances, they chose moral panic. Today, American Jewish organizations are dominated by radical progressive women who preach socialism from their Upper West Side condos, donate to universities that incubate antisemitism, and slap their names on donor walls while reciting TikTok ethics.
Talk about Israel, and they reflexively pivot to “Palestinian suffering.” Mention suicide bombings, and they’ll tell you Israelis should “try harder.” There’s no historical context, no realism just ideological performance art.
And now antisemitism has finally arrived on American soil, and their own children are among the mobs. At universities across the country, Jewish students are harassed, assaulted, and cornered by so-called social justice activists. When attacked, their parents blame them for not hiding. “Why didn’t you stay in your dorm? Why did you challenge the mob?”
In Boulder, CO an illegal Egyptian named Mohammad Soliman attacked a peaceful Jewish gathering with Molotov cocktails and a makeshift flamethrower. It was the second attack in as many weeks. Not a single Jew was armed. Why? Because American Jews don’t believe in the Second Amendment. Guns are for rednecks, not progressives. They’ve been taught that moral purity is more important than physical survival.
And so we see the final product: a community so deformed by ideology, it cannot even protect itself. A community that would rather lecture about inclusion than fight for its own safety. Reform and Conservative synagogues have raised a generation of Jews so neutered, so pacified, they’ve achieved what the Nazis dreamed of a Jewish population that will march quietly to their fate while reciting their Ivy League GPAs.
To Israelis, these air-conditioned ghetto Jews are worse than the ones who went to Auschwitz. US Jews have choices, they have rights, they have access to guns! while WW2 Jews had none of those.
