From the Ashes, A New Dawn: Hope, Family, and the Spirit of a Survivor – The Story of Claire Grunwald

“From the ashes rises many a new generation.” Claire Grunwald, born in Debrecen, Hungary in 1932, truly embodied this powerful sentiment. After surviving a year in a concentration camp, followed by four more years in a displaced person camp, she arrived in the United States in 1949. A remarkably resilient individual, Claire not only thrived against unimaginable odds but dedicated her life to uplifting others. As the proud owner of Accuhair Wigs by Claire, she built a successful business that offered more than just products; it provided support and renewed confidence to countless individuals. A poignant story illustrates her compassion: she specialized in crafting beards and payot (side curls) for very Orthodox Jewish men who had lost their hair due to cancer treatments, ensuring no one felt different or left out. Beyond her entrepreneurial spirit, Claire was also a passionate poet, channeling her profound experiences and deep emotions into poignant verses that resonated deeply with all who read them.

Claire’s story is one of incredible strength, courage, and unwavering emunah (faith) in Ha-shem, having survived the horrific realities of the Holocaust. Despite enduring unimaginable challenges and loss, she emerged as a beacon of hope and resilience for so many. Her indomitable spirit extended to her personal life as well; as a devoted mother of three, a cherished grandmother, and a loving great-grandmother, Claire’s dedication and love for her family were absolute and unwavering.

Beyond her personal and professional achievements, Claire was a tireless and dedicated advocate for Israel. She actively participated in rallies and events, consistently demonstrating her profound support for her homeland. This unwavering commitment to her heritage and to the causes that lay closest to her heart served as a powerful testament to her unbreakable spirit and steadfast values.

Claire Grunwald’s life was a living testament to the power of human endurance and the triumph of hope over adversity. A wonderful story is told of Claire as a young girl in Hungary: she was given a bag of sweet candy, a real treat in those days. She began distributing each piece to her sisters and family, and when it was her turn, she had none left, yet she still smiled, genuinely happy to bring joy to others. Claire unfortunately passed away this past year, on December 31, 2024, the sixth day of Chanukah. How appropriate it was Chanukah, the festival of lights and remembrance, for she was and will remain the light to her family and others for many generations. She left behind three children, 14 grandchildren, and 36 great-grandchildren – truly “Chai x 2,” symbolizing life and blessing. She was truly a woman who gave everything for others, especially for her family. From the ashes of the Holocaust, a vibrant family was born.

Breakfast Thoughts

We are having breakfast and my thoughts meander,

Looking at my beloved, and my thoughts are tender.

And I’m thinking: Oh! What could be on his mind

As his breakfast he eats, What thoughts would I there find?

Wed over fifty years , quietly we sit there.

His eyes are far away, mine are on him with care.

And I sit and think years of past come to mind.

When we loved or quarreled, All that’s left far behind.

So we quietly eat with our own thoughts busy.

What could be on his mind? The answer is easy.

Nothing complicated, The man has no guile.

His thoughts must be of me-and I give him a smile.

And his sweet face brightens, gratefully his eyes shine.

And I thank Hashem (G-D) for making this man all mine.

As I sat in her house for the Shiva and listened to many people talk about her, I’m glad I had the privilege of learning her story as told by her daughter, Chaya. May her Neshama have an Aliyah.
