From Les Misérables to the Maccabiah: A Young Star’s Journey to Israel
This month, gymnast Sophie Knapp stepped onto the floor of Teddy Stadium in Israel wearing the colors of Team USA at the 2026 Maccabiah Games. The talented athlete wasn’t simply competing for medals—she was joining thousands of Jewish athletes from around the world in a celebration of heritage, resilience, and unity.
For me, the moment was deeply personal.
As an Israeli and the creator behind the Kosher Barbie social media persona, I have spent years mentoring young Broadway performers on the stages of New York City. I first met Sophie when she was just five years old. From the very beginning, she stood out for her remarkable determination, natural confidence, and the pure joy she brought to every performance.
Years later, audiences across America watched Sophie shine as Little Cosette in the national tour of Les Misérables, where she brought one of musical theater’s most beloved characters to life with extraordinary talent and grace. This year’s Games carried special significance. Originally scheduled for 2025, they were postponed because of security concerns. When athletes finally gathered in Israel in 2026, their presence became a powerful symbol of resilience, solidarity, and hope.
Representing Team USA, Sophie rose to the occasion, earning three bronze medals after years of dedication, discipline, and relentless training. Yet her greatest achievement could not be measured only by medals.
“Coming to Israel for the Maccabiah gave me the opportunity to connect with my Jewish roots, represent my country, and show my support for Israel,” Sophie told me. “It was an experience I will always carry with me.”
Reflecting on the experience, Sophie said:
