From Pride to Possibility: Why the Technion’s AI Revolution Matters to Us All

In my last blog post, I wrote that philanthropy is most powerful when it is connected to meaning. As fundraisers and storytellers, our responsibility is not simply to celebrate Israel’s achievements. It is to help people understand why those achievements matter, how they improve lives, and why they deserve our collective support. 

That challenge feels especially urgent as we navigate one of the most transformative moments of our time: the rise of artificial intelligence.

Not long ago, AI belonged mostly to the realm of science fiction. Today, it touches nearly every aspect of our lives. It helps us navigate traffic, identify health concerns, make purchasing decisions, and communicate more effectively. Yet while AI is already changing the way we live, its impact on scientific discovery may prove even more profound.

At the Technion, researchers are embracing AI not simply as another tool, but as a force fundamentally reshaping how knowledge is created and breakthroughs are achieved. Their work offers a powerful example of something I believe deeply: Israel’s innovations are not only a source of pride for the Jewish people. They are a force for global good.

Technion President Prof. Uri Sivan has described AI as a kind of “superbrain” to which humanity is increasingly connected. This superbrain can process enormous amounts of information, identify patterns that would otherwise go unnoticed, and help solve problems at speeds that seemed impossible only a few years ago.

For researchers, that capability is revolutionary.

Across the Technion’s campus, scientists and engineers are integrating AI into fields ranging from medicine and biology to physics and mechanical engineering. Research tasks that once required months or years can now be completed in dramatically shorter timeframes. Complex simulations can be run faster. More data can be analyzed. New ideas can be tested more efficiently.

The result is not merely faster science. It is the possibility of accelerating solutions to some of humanity’s biggest challenges.

Consider medicine. Traditionally, developing new treatments required years of trial-and-error experimentation. Today, researchers are increasingly able to create sophisticated digital models of organs and biological systems, allowing them to test countless possibilities in virtual environments before moving promising discoveries into the laboratory.

Or consider climate and energy research. Advanced computing enables scientists to model complex systems, uncover new efficiencies, and explore pathways toward a more sustainable future. In physics, researchers can simulate phenomena that would be impossible to study through conventional experimentation alone.

These are not abstract academic exercises. They are the building blocks of healthier lives, stronger economies, and a better world.

This is why I often speak about moving beyond familiarity and toward relevance.

For many supporters, Israel’s innovation ecosystem is already a source of admiration. The phrase “Startup Nation” has become part of our collective vocabulary. But the deeper question we must ask is not whether Israel is innovative. It is why that innovation matters now.

The AI revolution provides a compelling answer.

What is happening at the Technion today will shape medical advances, technological breakthroughs, economic growth, and educational opportunities for decades to come. The discoveries emerging from its laboratories and research centers will not remain confined to campus. They will ripple outward, benefiting communities around the world.

At a time when many people are searching for meaningful ways to make a difference, this work demonstrates the extraordinary impact that philanthropy can have.

There is also another, less visible side to this story.

Behind every AI breakthrough lies a critical need for infrastructure. The public often focuses on algorithms and applications, but cutting-edge AI research depends on something much more tangible: computing power.

To compete at the highest level, researchers need advanced systems capable of processing vast amounts of data. They need specialized graphics processing units, known as GPUs, which power many of today’s most sophisticated AI models. They need facilities designed to support these technologies through advanced cooling systems, electrical capacity, and networking infrastructure.

In many ways, these resources have become the laboratories of the 21st century. Today, the Technion is taking an important step forward with the construction of the Martin and Grace Druan Rosman High-Performance Computer Data Center. This state-of-the-art facility will help create the infrastructure necessary to support next-generation AI research and discovery. It is an investment in possibility.

At the same time, the need remains significant. A building alone cannot generate breakthroughs. It must be equipped with the resources that allow researchers to push boundaries, test ideas, and remain competitive in a rapidly evolving global landscape.

This challenge takes on additional significance when viewed through the lens of Israel’s recent trials. Institutions across the country have devoted tremendous effort to supporting students, families, communities, and national resilience. Investments in research and innovation now become part of rebuilding and strengthening the future.

That future depends on people. It depends on brilliant students who will become entrepreneurs, engineers, physicians, and scientists. It depends on researchers willing to tackle difficult problems.

It also depends on supporters who recognize that philanthropic investment can help turn possibility into progress. This is why storytelling matters.

When we tell our story well, we are not simply talking about computers, research facilities, or scientific advances. We are talking about human potential. We are talking about how one institution can help shape discoveries that improve lives far beyond Israel’s borders.

Most importantly, we are building connections. Connections between donors and impact. Connections between communities and innovation. Connections between today’s investments and tomorrow’s breakthroughs.

As I look ahead to future conversations, I remain convinced that our greatest opportunity lies in helping people see these connections clearly. When philanthropy is rooted in meaning, it becomes more than a gift. It becomes a partnership in building a better future.

The question before us is not whether transformation will happen. It is how boldly we choose to support it.

And that is a story worth telling.
