Genocide loves post-truth

I’ve just read an article in Polish about a Nazi war criminal who had gotten annoyed because he kept getting letters from people telling him that the Holocaust was a lie. Made-up. Just a fantasy, a figment of his imagination, they wrote. The Nazi couldn’t stand the stupidity of these people to the point of saying that yes – he was there. He saw it. He did it.

Now, what drives people to deny the horrors of the Holocaust or genocide in general?

Some just can’t imagine it. Some know it’s true but they prefer to convince themselves it’s a lie. Some know it’s true and they lie on purpose. Some lie for money, some lie to hide their ideology-driven crimes, some lie out of spite because it’s fun to mess with people’s minds, by twisting the truth, implanting a false reality, and attacking any voices stating otherwise. It gives such people a sense of power. They control the minds of others. They get off on it.

The truth. Exactly. What do you do when there’s no truth as such? No reference point because someone, somewhere, can always claim something else? When whatever you say is the truth at a given moment? That’s what propagandists do. The truth is whatever their leader tells them the truth is at a given moment. Contradictions and absurdities don’t matter because people won’t remember the next day, anyway.

Genocidal maniacs love the post-truth world because you can just claim something is fake. And if something is fake today, then why not in the past? Nothing is sacred. Even borders.

Borders? What borders?

Look at the plight of the hostages. There’s a fool somewhere in the world who says it’s fake. Staged. That Hamas isn’t real, just as some idiot was saying school shootings don’t happen and covid victims were all fake. Yes, there are people like that and not just a few.

We say we need to battle disinformation. The problem is, because of all that mess, there are many, many people out there who don’t believe anything anymore. So, you can show them all the proof you want. It won’t matter. They’ll just say that the hostages are paid actors, for example. They are going to deny whatever you show them. Why?

Because it makes them look cool. Edgy. Like they are some kind of truthseekers exposing the system. They see through the system but you? Well, you’re just a part of the sheeple. Holocaust? Auschwitz anniversary? Oh, propaganda. There were no gas chambers. That’s what they are going to tell you. Seemingly educated people, too.

So, when you see a guy who clearly comes from money protesting capitalism or evil Israelis, it’s not even that he’s so dumb and doesn’t know what’s going on. He could well be doing it for attention. For the heck of it. Cause it’s fun. Or maybe he’s just crazy as there’s a lot of that going around, too. It takes a powerful mind not to lose the ability to think clearly in this weird world of ours. It takes a powerful mind not to go nuts these days.

And history shows us what happens when humanity loses its mind. It’s been so for thousands of years. The cycle we know all too well.
