There’s something almost magical about drifting over water so clear it feels like you’re floating on air. Our recent family adventure with Get Up And Go Kayaking at Rainbow Springs was breathtaking—an intimate and immersive encounter with Florida’s most beloved gentle giants, the manatees.

Unforgettable Encounter with Florida’s Gentle Giants

One of the highlights of our journey was the chance to witness manatees in their natural habitat. These large, gentle marine mammals migrate to Florida’s warm springs during the winter months, seeking refuge in the constant 72-degree waters. Rainbow Springs provides an ideal sanctuary for these creatures, making it one of the most spectacular locations in Florida for a close-up wildlife experience.

As we paddled quietly in our fully transparent kayaks, anticipation built with every stroke. Then, the magic happened—a manatee surfaced right beside us, releasing a soft exhale before slowly submerging again. Every few minutes, we would spot another gracefully navigating the crystal-clear waters beneath us. It was an awe-inspiring experience, feeling the presence of these magnificent beings gliding so effortlessly through their serene habitat.

On some days, entire pods of manatees can be spotted resting in the springs, their massive bodies swaying gently with the current. These peaceful herbivores, often called “sea cows,” are known for their slow, deliberate movements, making it easy to observe them in their natural setting without disturbing their routines. Our guide shared fascinating insights into their behavior, diet, and the conservation efforts aimed at protecting their fragile ecosystem.

A Transparent Adventure on the Water

Stepping into our fully transparent kayaks, we felt as if we were entering another world—a realm where light danced on the water, fish glided beneath us, and lush greenery framed the sparkling blue and turquoise hues of the Rainbow River. Led by a passionate and knowledgeable guide, we embarked on a journey that blended tranquility, adventure, and an incredible sense of connection with the natural world.

The tour began with an upstream paddle along the Rainbow River, allowing us to fully absorb the pristine environment. Every stroke revealed new wonders: schools of fish darting below, turtles sunning themselves on fallen logs, and the occasional sight of an alligator lazily gliding along the riverbank. The soundscape of chirping birds and rustling leaves added to the serene atmosphere, making it easy to forget the modern world existed beyond this lush paradise.

A Walk Through Silver Springs State Park

Our exploration of Ocala’s natural wonders didn’t end with the kayak tour. After stepping out of our kayaks, we visited Silver Springs State Park, a gem of Florida’s state park system. Following winding walking paths along the river, we were treated to more wildlife sightings—birds perched on cypress branches, turtles basking in the sun, and even a few playful otters splashing in the shallows.

One of the park’s most iconic attractions is the historic glass-bottom boat tour, which has been operating since the 1870s. Gazing through the transparent floor of the boat, we marveled at submerged ancient artifacts, aquatic plants, and deep, sapphire-blue springs bubbling beneath us. It was a reminder of how these waters have captivated travelers for generations and continue to be a beacon for nature lovers.

A Mission Rooted in Conservation

Beyond offering an unforgettable adventure, Get Up And Go Kayaking operates with a deeper mission: to inspire and educate visitors on the importance of environmental stewardship. Since its inception in 2016, the company has prioritized sustainability by offering eco-friendly tours that minimize human impact while maximizing appreciation for Florida’s delicate ecosystems.

A portion of every reservation is dedicated to conservation efforts, ensuring that the waterways and wildlife that make these tours so extraordinary remain protected for future generations. This commitment to preserving Florida’s natural beauty extends beyond business—it’s a passion that drives the company’s expansion and innovation.

Why You Should Just ‘Get Up and Go’

From its humble beginnings as a small operation run out of a two-bedroom apartment to becoming the world’s first clear-kayak tour franchise, Get Up And Go Kayaking has revolutionized nature-based tourism. Our experience at Rainbow Springs was more than just a kayaking trip—it was a journey through one of Florida’s most stunning natural environments guided by those who truly care about its preservation. But above all, it was an unforgettable chance to connect with Florida’s most iconic wildlife, the manatees, in a way that felt both respectful and deeply moving.
