The duke and duchess of Sussex are no longer working members of the English royal family. Why do we care? Why are we fascinated?
If one looks below the surface, there are some very interesting phenomenon taking place in the choices of the Royal/Starlet duo. Having lived for long periods of time in both Los Angeles (the home of glitz, glamour and self-indulgence) and London (a Capital struggling to hold on to centuries of tradition and self-respect), the couple’s connection to these two cities fascinates me. The marriage of beautiful bi-racial Megan and reformed bad-boy Harry is in fact the pinnacle of a culmination of the societal changes across the western world. What appeared at first to be a love match made in heaven, may turn out to be a disappointment to all involved.
In many ways, the couple have become symbols of the changes of societal values – the move away from previously held esteem for the culture and history of one’s nation. Family ties across the globe have disintegrated, now that 50% of western marriages end in divorce. Intermarriage among races and religions has become an accepted norm in spite of the loss of generations of tradition in the process. The focus on individual fulfillment rather than family obligations has become a prime motivator for recent generations. This royal couple has become the “poster children” …albeit a bit too old for the title…for a generation of souls looking for their identity by running away from traditions, restrictions and familial expectations which might impede them
As a successful actress whose net worth has been reported at five million dollars, Megan entered the whirl of Royal adulation by marrying her Prince. For a very short while, she had a royal title herself. She has been stripped of it now. In less than two years the couple managed to spend three million dollars on their royal home. Now that they have chosen to leave their responsibilities to the Crown, they are being asked to repay the three million dollars and pay rent on the home if they wish to stay there. Dejected Megan does not think that the Queen has been “fair.” She has no idea of the Queen’s inner fortitude. Megan is no match for her.
Harry wants to be free of his royal responsibilities. But indeed, this is all that he has ever known. His entire identity is tied up with his birthright. He is not only a prince…but the son of the adored Diana and the legacy which she left in her unfortunate passing. Harry has married a woman who has no apparent birthright … who does not speak with her father or siblings, and who wants her husband to be as “free” as she is. She is lured by the glamour of Los Angeles. No doubt, Harry is excited about that as well. It is interesting that their ultimate goal is to live in the land of the superficial and leave the obligations of royal service behind.
Megan says she will not live in Los Angeles until Donald Trump is no longer President of the United States. She is clearly making a political statement, however immature and irrelevant her opinion really is to most of us. Essentially Ms. Megan is saying that until the United States elects a leader of whom she approves, she will not grace America with her presence. How much more judgmental, self-involved, and polarizing can a woman be? Los Angeles is the perfect haven for the couple regardless of who is in the White House. It does seem that most of the decision-making is being made by the lovely “Ms.M. “ That indeed should give Harry pause.
Predictions are easy to make… but based on the drama which has unfolded, it seems that what was intended to be a glorious “liberation” will within the next ten years, go sour. Megan will continue to be a glamour queen. She will enhance her acting career in order to replace the three million dollars they will have to “cough up” to the royal household. Her hubby will become “Mr. Megan.” He will search for purpose and no doubt go to the “ backlots” of the film studios when his wife is working, in order to hobnob with the trendy crowd. It is vaguely reminiscent of the film “A Star is Born.” Hopefully its ending will not be as tragic.
Why do we care so much about this couple? They have become symbols to most of us -of the current tug of war in Western societies. Their walking away from civic obligations, centuries of historic tradition and a Royal family adored by the British people, is much like the splitting up of our own families, or those of other people we know and love. In some way, everyone can find an element in their story with which to connect.
When I watched the wedding of Megan and Harry, I knew that it was only the beginning of a future drama. When Megan invited her Preacher to pontificate endlessly at the wedding as he might have in a Southern Baptist Church, the writing was on the wall. She did not understand what she had “married into.” She did not respect their traditions. She thought she could change it all.
Megan and Harry wanted “out.” The Crown did not try to stop them, but has found a way to castrate the couple. They wanted to leave, and so they shall…with no use of their royalty to line the coffers of their future. The Queen did it with her usual elegance…a smile and a wave of farewell.
Stay tuned for the inevitable Netflix series … It will be a “sequel” which could run for many years to come. Perhaps this one will be titled: “Escaping the Crown.”
