Hollywood Fiction Becomes Reality

Although some cultures did practice human sacrifices throughout history, the lore surrounding virginal sacrifices into active volcanoes is outright Hollywood creation.  The historical practice and the cinema trope have since faded into obscurity. Or so I thought.
Apparently Jews are still expected to sacrifice their own self-interest not only in communal preservation but their desire to live in peace.  And not only from the usually quarters.  They are even expected to do so by their own co-religionists.
Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel, a Jewish Democrat, was notably silent in the debate about her party’s support for Michigan’s Senate nominee, Abdul El-Sayed, who objects to Israel’s existence and who only a few months ago excused terrorism in favor of “context.” Until, that is, some Democratic donors and voters voiced their support for Mr. El-Sayed’s Republican opponent and Mr. El-Sayed felt the need to offer a mealy-mouthed I-am-sorry-if-my-comments-offended-anyone apology.
Enter Ms. Nessel. It has been reported thar she told attendees at the Michigan Democratic Jewish Caucus’ annual “Summer Simcha” gathering that “[we] have a moral imperative to place the needs of the world above even our own self-interest and, yes, even our own survival.”  Because apparently not voting straight down the Democrat ticket is immoral or something.
These remarks have curious timing given that only several weeks ago Ms. Nessel announced that she would not be attending the state party’s August convention because she did not feel safe or welcome at that event as a Jew.  So, her self-interest is fine and dandy apparently.
Unfortunately, she is not the only one. Having ousted his Jewish opponent, Dan Goldman, after labeling him an AIPAC stooge, Brad Lander found out the other day that his constituents still consider him a “Zionist ball sack.”  Nothing is good enough for the terrorist-loving sort. Yet, he was happy to play the part, even going so far as to claim that “people are perverting Judaism” in defending Jewish national aspirations, which he sees as “ethnic cleansing and exclusion.”  Thanks Rabbi Lander. . .
This type of internalized self-hatred is truly pathological. Even the most wayward Jewish character in a Philip Roth novel would not advocate for such levels of self-rejection. And this goes well beyond rejection of Jewish self-determination or Jewish particularity. Although both concepts are only considered evil when applied to Jews.  Taken to its logical conclusion, both Nessel and Lander, as well as many of their party colleagues believe that Jews do not deserve to participate in political discourse. They and the rest of the world demand that Jews engage in complete self-abnegation for the so-called greater good.
Their role is to play the proverbial virgin in the volcano to pacify the gods. If they would just shut up and jump in already . . .
