How Exploiting Religion Endangers Human Rights in the West and Beyond

Across the globe from the Middle East to democratic societies in Europe and the United States a destructive force is tightening its grip: the cynical weaponization of faith. Religion, which should serve as a moral compass for human dignity, is increasingly hijacked by political demagogues and extremists who use sacred beliefs to fracture communities, demonize the “other,” and consolidate power.

At its core, this engineered division is a critical human rights crisis. In modern democratic nations, we witness extremist groups and opportunistic politicians exploiting religious sensitivities to polarize populations, suppress freedom of expression, and erode minority rights. By framing political disagreements as a battle between the “righteous” and the “infidel,” these actors deliberately undermine the universal principle that all human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights.

The strategy relies on a dangerous dichotomy: stripping individuals of their universal identity as human beings and reducing them to dogmatic labels. When faith becomes a political weapon, fundamental rights suffer immediately. Dissenters and critical thinkers are silenced through accusations of sacrilege. Vulnerable communities become targets for hate speech and violence, while civic solidarity is replaced by fear and hostility.

The consequences extend far beyond national borders. When Western democracies allow hate-driven politics under the guise of religious defense, it validates oppressive regimes worldwide. Extremism breeds counter-extremism in a vicious cycle that threatens global stability.

To counter the merchants of division, societies must reaffirm that no religious dogma can override basic human rights. The path forward requires protecting democratic institutions, safeguarding freedom of conscience, educating communities on universal rights principles, and holding hate speech accountable under the law. Humanity cannot afford to let faith be turned into a tool of destruction. Only by placing universal human rights at the center of our discourse can we dismantle the architecture of division and build a world of peaceful coexistence.
