Netanyahu must be fuming
The government is still pretending to slow down and compromise on judicial reforms. Yet, its extreme right ring would bolt if it did. And it’s screaming it from the rooftops. Keeping the left awake and vigilant.
Netanyahu is not stupid. What ace does he have up his sleeve? Because his coalition is heading straight for the abyss. After the crash will come new elections in which the right can choose between humbly sitting in the opposition for a century or in a small corner of a broad government.
Does Bibi bank on coming out a national hero for attacking Iran? He knows history. Churchill won the war for Britain and at the next election was voted out. Is he waiting for all his legal cases to collapse? The public does not care about them anymore. All we want is democracy. He sold his soul to the devil (the extreme, hateful right) which sealed his fate. Does he want to throw out the extreme right and so win back our hearts? Too late.
Officials call upon fanatics to restrain their remarks not to ruin the chances for a widespread compromise. But for the extreme right, it’s all or nothing; for the center and the left, it’s nothing. Stop flogging; the horse is dead. Just like these politicians who urged to realize a two-state solution as ‘the window of opportunity was closing.’ It was boarded up from both sides.
Meanwhile, Ben Gevir is proposing administrative detention against a couple of dozen crime bosses, the legal monster he’s been decrying all his life. And his so-called nuanced bill to protect against violent husbands is up. That will chip some more from his base’s support. The Bibi trick.
Sometimes we take the good for granted. After the sudden assault on our human rights and democracy and their protectors (the High Court, police, and army), and after we prevailed, we will appreciate them so much more.
