How to Move to Israel from the United States?
Firstly, congrats to you. You are thinking about starting a new exciting adventure! However, if you’re interested in moving to Israel from the United States, there are many things you’ll need to do to prepare.
Here are some steps to follow to make your move as smooth as possible:
Firstly, Research the Visa Requirements.
If you’re not an Israeli citizen, you’ll need to get / have a visa to live and work in Israel. There are many different types of visas available, so it’s important to research the requirements and find out which visa is best for you and your situation.

Secondly, Start Gathering Your Documents.
Depending on the type of visa you’re applying for, you will need to provide a variety of documents. Here is a list of most of the documents you will need to provide if you want to move to Israel from America.
- Valid Passport: A passport with a minimum validity of six months from your intended date of arrival in Israel.
- Birth Certificate: A certified copy of your birth certificate.
- Marriage Certificate: If applicable
- Divorce Certificate: If applicable
- Criminal Record Check: A police clearance certificate from your country of origin, stating that you have no criminal convictions.
- Medical Examination: A medical examination by a designated doctor to make sure you meet Israel’s health requirements.
- Financial Proof: This means having evidence of the financial means to support yourself and your family in Israel. This might include bank statements, paycheck stubs, employment contracts, or other financial documents.
- Aliyah Application: Complete the official Aliyah application form provided by the Israeli Ministry of the Interior.
- Work Permit: If you plan to move to Israel from America to work, you will definitely need to obtain a work permit.
Make sure you have all of the necessary documents before you begin the application process.

Thirdly, Apply for Your Visa.
Once you know the type of visa you want, – and gathered your documents, you can apply for a visa through the Israeli consulate or the Israeli embassy in the United States.
The application process will take several weeks (minimum), so be sure to start early… and stay patient.
Fourthly, Find a Place for You To Live.
Before you move to Israel, you’ll want to find a place to live.
Research different neighborhoods and cities to determine which area is the best fit for your needs and budget.
You can look for rental properties online (here are a few websites you can use – https://www.yad2.co.il, https://www.onmap.co.il/en/, https://www.zillow.com/il/rent-houses/, https://www.properstar.com/israel/rent/flat), or of course you can check on Facebook – or work with a real estate agent to find a place to live.

Fifthly, Learn the Language.
While many (if not most) Israelis speak English, learning Hebrew will prove very valuable when you are trying to navigate everyday life in Israel. If you can, take a language course before you move, or work with a tutor once you arrive.
Also, you will have the option to go to “Ulpan” – A language school to learn Hebrew. You can find many ulpan’s in every major city in Israel.
Furthermore, most ulpan’s offer full-time and part-time study programs – and they are a great place to make your first friends in Israel! 🙂

In Conclusion…
Moving to Israel from the United States takes alot of preparation and planning, but with the right steps, you can make the transition smoothly.
Start by researching the visa requirements, gathering your documents, applying for the right visa, finding a place to live, learning the language, and connecting with a community – to make your move to Israel a success.
Good luck!
