I will put my hands over you!

Today I woke up to the sad news of the passing of Lindsey Graham.

I did not want to believe it, so I checked a few of my news apps, and soon grasped the reality of his loss.

Seldom has any human being been so outspoken in support of Israel and the Jewish people. Whenever he made a public statement, I felt as if G-d had sent down from Heaven an angel who would “put his hands over us.”

Those words come from Yeshayahu, whose prophecy I had just listened to. It describes the loneliness of Hashem’s people and His promise of protection. Somehow, those ancient words echoed in my heart as I thought about Lindsey Graham.

There are moments in history when the Jewish people feel isolated, misunderstood, or abandoned. Yet every so often, someone with courage and conviction stands beside us without hesitation. Lindsey Graham was one of those rare individuals.

He understood that supporting Israel was not merely a political position. He spoke with warmth, clarity, and moral conviction. His voice gave strength to countless Jews around the world, especially during difficult times, when words of friendship carried enormous weight.

As I reflected on his passing, I realized that his support reminded me of another image that is so precious to us.

When we sit in the Sukkah, we experience a feeling of closeness to Hashem, much like the feeling of standing beneath the Chuppah. The branches above us are placed with spaces between them so that the light from Heaven can penetrate.

That heavenly light reminds us that even when we feel vulnerable, we are never alone.

Hashem’s protection reaches us through those openings, surrounding us with His presence.

Lindsey Graham’s friendship gave many of us a similar feeling. His steadfast support brought comfort and reassurance during times of uncertainty. He reminded us that even in a complicated world, there are people of integrity who stand with the Jewish people.

May his memory be a blessing, and may the light he brought through his unwavering friendship continue to inspire others to stand for truth, justice, and the people of Israel.
