Finally, after all those years, Bert and Ernie have come out. What took them so long?
In the sixties, there were on Dutch TV in De Fabeltjeskrant Jodokus de Marmot and Droes de Beer (bear), two males living together in one hole. Not a word about their short-lived relationship. The daily puppet series was so popular that many other countries made their own versions.
Around of turn of the century, the insufferable ever-giggling world-famous British Teletubbies featured Tinky Winky, who was purple and thought to be gay.Staying in the UK, JK Rowling, a few years ago, outed her favorite Harry Potter character, Dumbledore, the kind and cuddly grand wizard who mentored Harry Potter.
And now finally, cohabiting Bert and Ernie also have been outed by their author – after which he claimed that his words were “misinterpreted.”
Fiction always means to portray something about the real world, so what’s the hype?
But in any case, if anyone still says: In the Bible, it says Adam and Eve, not Adam and Steve, we can from now on respond with: In Sesame Street (in the real world), they are Bert and Ernie, not Bert and Sigourney.
