Issues regarding Russia fighting Ukraine
Facts and words matter. When a man hits his wife, it’s not an argument. It’s battering. When Russia tries to occupy Ukraine, it’s an assault, not war.
It’s heroic to fight to your death, defying an attack. But, it’s not the Jewish way if you have a way out. Saving your life, if possible, sans endangering others’ lives, is preferred. As I argued before. Yet, even as I disagree with the Ukraine strategy, every killing of a Ukrainian is murder; every death of a Russian soldier there is self-defense. No, to false moral equivalence.
Many in Europe fear WW III, Russian occupation, Cold War II, or global nuclear extermination. Great. Whatever fantasy makes you braver.
A rabbi gave a very learned answer to the question: “Is G-d Punishing Ukraine?” My simple, double answer is: We know that G^d only punishes unto the third and fourth generation if they follow the sinful ways of their (great)grandparents. The Ukrainian People, with 70% of the vote, elected a Jewish president. It repented. Case closed. Besides, Abraham (re Sodom) teaches us that our task in life is to try to get people exonerated by G^d, not to justify Divine punishment. The latter job is the Devil’s.
Putin is not crazy or stupid. An imbecile or crazy isn’t responsible. He is. He freely chose evil, making him evil, not crazy or dumb. Predictable he is. We know for sure he will continue his downward, wicked spiral.
Bullies attack because they feel threatened. They feel the victim. It’s an irrational fear. They don’t notice that only they attack. You can only stop them by overpowering them. There is no appeasement possible since they feel deep disdain for nice people. They only respect displays of power.
The best and fastest way to rid the Russian and Ukrainian People of Putin is quickly to impoverish Russia. The sanctions really do that. In no time, the richest Russians and the army will replace Putin. I hope they don’t kill him because he needs to be tried for his crimes against humanity.
The world should insist that the new leader of Russia will begin reforms toward more democracy, more freedom, more equality in Russia.
Russia, like Germany after WW II, must begin to pay Ukraine and Ukrainians for the damage and murders. In tandem with that, the liberated innocent Russians and Ukrainians should meet to foster brotherhood.
The surprising world’s unity against this assault should immediately be harnessed for the fight against humanity’s climate extermination, world hunger, China’s ethnic cleansing and State coercion, and a nuclear Iran.
