Jewish identity: who are identifying us and why we are being identified

Many Gentile peoples have been trying to put together the identification characteristics of the Jews with the purpose of using these characteristics for predicting the future of the Jewish people or for developing the policy on handling the “alien” Jewish people in the midst of the “native” country population.

So far we the Jews have not been able to create our own identity comprehensive characteristics to overcome negative, and sometimes murderous, consequences of identification characteristics of the others. It looks like “to be born to a Jewish family” has been not enough to find a common ground with many in the Gentile world who are interested as we are in “making the world a better place for everybody”.

Among those who are identifying the Jews are real enemies of the Jewish people who are trying to physically or spiritually eliminate the Jewish people. In the recent past they were the Nazis in the Hitler’s Germany who murdered six million Jews, and the Communists of the Soviet Union who spiritually exterminated five million Soviet Jews by forbidding them to live in accordance with their own unique moral principles.

Hitler identified the Jewish people as inherently (genetically) evil and as such they have to be eliminated completely. He said “Even had there never existed a synagogue or a Jewish school or the Old Testament, the Jewish spirit would still exist and would exert its influence. It has been there from the beginning, and there is no Jew, not a single one, who does not personify it.” Hitler clearly understood from the very beginning that Jewish Old-Testament spirit of individual freedoms and obedience to God above us the humans had to be eliminated to create a space for his own murderous collective Arian testament proclaiming Hitler as a human god, and the Jewish spirit has to be eliminated together with all its human carriers the Jews. In essence, Stalin of the Communist Soviet Union was of the same determination – he was trying to eliminate the Jewish spirit as well although by not-physically-lethal means to clean up space for his new Communist testament with him as a human god.

Unfortunately, the Jewish spiritual response to the Hitler-Stalin testaments was inadequate to defend the Old Testament, the Jews and entire Judeo-Christian community. Self-identification of the orthodox Jewish communities moved them into spiritual isolation while self-identification of the reform Jewish communities moved them to spiritual association with gentile progressive communities the spirit of which was not Old-Testament-based one. Jewish intellectual atheists and agnostics didn’t help in fight with Nazi/Communist ideology as well; they didn’t care about the Jewish faith and history since they believed in the “natural” moral laws for all humanity – the laws that had been created by Darwin’s evolution – not by God.

Thus no influential Jewish spiritual movement emerged at the beginning of 20th century to identify itself with Old-testament-based Judeo-Christian strategy for fighting Nazi/Communist Evil.

It looks like the Jewish spiritual identification based on commonly accepted “born to a Jewish family” was not enough to make the Christian world work together with us at preventing the Old-Testament-defined evils.

The future of the Jewish people depends on how they are perceived and identified by themselves and by others, and therefore advancing the discussion in this area should be of real interest for Judeo-Christian communities – and the strongest antidote against assimilation!
