Jews have saved the lives of millions of Muslims and Christians
Dear Times of Israel readers:
I’m sharing with you a full-page public statement that I placed in The New York Times on May 15, 2026.
Before doing so, I approached all of the major American Jewish organizations and invited them to place the statement. None chose to participate, so I ultimately decided to publish it on my own.

JEWS HAVE SAVED THE LIVES OF MILLIONS OF MUSLIMS AND CHRISTIANS
Let’s start with POLIO.
Polio killed, it crippled, it paralyzed. It is estimated to have caused two to five million deaths worldwide. At its peak in the 1940s and 1950s, it paralyzed or killed more than 500,000 people each year. Children in particular suffered the horrors of coffin-like iron lungs because they could not breathe on their own.
Someone had to discover a vaccine that could eradicate this terrible disease.
Two Jews did — Jonas Salk and Albert Sabin.
Dr. Salk was also instrumental in developing the flu vaccine.
What follows is a listing of some other Jews who saved and improved millions of lives —
Waldemar Haffkine: A microbiologist who discovered the vaccines that conquered cholera and bubonic plague. It is estimated that more than 200 million died from the plague throughout human history. The death toll from cholera ran into the tens of millions. The antisemites never heard of Haffkine. Very few Jews ever heard of him.
Stanley Plotkin: Discovered the vaccines that wiped out rubella and rabies. Rubella had caused devastating birth defects.
George Rosenkranz: An organic chemist who developed the first practical synthesis of cortisone used to treat rheumatoid arthritis and reduce painful inflammation in muscles and joints. He also invented the oral contraceptive pill, enabling women to avoid unwanted pregnancies and abortions.
Liane Russell: A geneticist who pointed out the danger of radiation on developing fetuses. Because of her, doctors do not take X-rays of pregnant women.
Baruch Blumberg: A geneticist who developed the vaccine to eradicate the hepatitis B virus.
Selman Waksman: Discovered streptomycin, the first effective antibiotic against tuberculosis, saving millions of lives.
Gertrude Elion: Developed drugs to treat leukemia, autoimmune disease, and to prevent organ transplant rejection.
Cesar Milstein: Helped develop monoclonal antibody technology used to treat cancers, autoimmune diseases, and infections.
Cardiologist Eugene Braunwald: Whose research reshaped how doctors understood heart attacks, heart failure, and coronary artery disease. His research led to treatments that reduced blood pressure, reopened blocked arteries, and greatly improved survival rates after heart attacks. Braunwald’s name appears on over one thousand scientific papers, many of which focused on how to prevent heart attacks and strokes.
Sixty-two Jews have won the Nobel Prize in physiology or medicine, representing 26% of the total. Fifty-six Jews have won the Nobel Prize in physics, representing 24% of the total. Yet Jews constitute far less than 2% of the world’s population.
These Jews, and those listed above, were not looking to score political points or to amass wealth and power. They were seeking ways to benefit all of humanity.
If not for the Holocaust all cancers would have been eradicated. Other diseases as well. Think of the brain power that was lost because the victims could not produce children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. How many Einsteins and Salks would the six million have produced?
