Joe Manchin, Hubert Humphrey & World Jewry – Standing Up For What Is Right

בסייד

Hubert H. Humphrey

In 1948, at the Democratic National Convention, Hubert H. Humphrey made a historic speech which established Humphrey as a strong spokesman for Civil and Human Rights. It would be another 16 years before Humphrey; in his capacity as Vice President under LBJ; and less than one year after JFK’s assassination; would be able to gain enough support in Congress to be a key player in the creation of the 1964 Civil Rights Act.

But it was not an easy process because strong opposition to the bill came from Senator Strom Thurmond, who was still a Democrat at the time. He said “This so-called Civil Rights Proposals [sic], which the President has sent to Capitol Hill for enactment into law, are unconstitutional, unnecessary, unwise and extend beyond the realm of reason. This is the worst civil-rights package ever presented to the Congress and is reminiscent of the Reconstruction proposals and actions of the radical Republican Congress.”[25]

After the filibuster had gone on for 54 days, Senators Mansfield, Hubert HumphreyMike MansfieldEverett Dirksen, and Thomas Kuchel introduced a substitute bill that they hoped would overcome it by combining a sufficient number of Republicans as well as core liberal Democrats.

Senator Robert Byrd ended his filibuster in opposition to the bill on the morning of June 10, 1964, after 14 hours and 13 minutes. Up to then, the measure had occupied the Senate for 60 working days, including six Saturdays. The day before, Democratic Whip Hubert Humphrey, the bill’s manager, concluded that he had the 67 votes required at that time to end the debate and the filibuster. With six wavering senators providing a four-vote victory margin, the final tally stood at 71 to 29. Never before in its entire history had the Senate been able to muster enough votes to defeat a filibuster on a civil rights bill.

Vice President Hubert Humphrey won the 1968 Democratic presidential nomination, and Byrd campaigned for him that fall.[60]

Joe Manchin Succeeded Robert Byrd

Manchin won the 2010 special election to fill the Senate seat vacated by incumbent Democrat Robert Byrd‘s death with 54% of the vote.

In June 2017, Manchin co-sponsored the Israel Anti-Boycott Act (S.270), which made it a federal crime, punishable by a maximum sentence of 20 years imprisonment,[170] for Americans to encourage or participate in boycotts against Israel and Israeli settlements in the occupied Palestinian territories if protesting actions by the Israeli government.[171]

In a link to a press release dated June 21, 2021, Senators Manchin and Rubio reintroduced the bipartisan Combating BDS Act of 2021 follows-

A key statement from Senator Manchin highlights his strong support for Israel-

“The bipartisan Combating BDS Act is a step towards ensuring individual states have the right to pass laws that prevent business transactions with the anti-Israeli BDS movement,” Senator Manchin said. “I urge my colleagues on both sides of the aisle to join this bipartisan legislation to support individual states and our valued ally, Israel.”

Senator Manchin Dealt A Heavy Blow To Fellow Democrats And Humphrey Would No Doubt Have Done The Same

Sen. Joe Manchin, declared Sunday that after months of negotiations he cannot support the massive social spending bill known as the Build Back Better Act. This was clearly a decision based on common sense when looking at all the facts. I am confident Hubert Humphrey would have arrived at the same conclusion.

Manchin’s strong support for US ally Israel is also based on simple common sense. With Manchin declaring his opposition to the anti-Israel BDS Movement, he is standing up for me, my family and my fellow Israelis.

That is what is sorely lacking from the current Democratic Party, someone to stand up for what is right like Hubert Humphrey did at that 1948 Democratic Convention to declare no matter what your skin color is you deserve to be equally treated like your fellow human beings.

Manchin firmly believes that Jews and Israel also deserve equal treatment. That is also consistent with the strong support and respect Hubert Humphrey had for Israel. But is at tremendous odds with the current views of many within the Democratic Party who support those members that continually use their voice in Congress to openly bash Israel.

Their open support for the Palestinians, which is home to terrorist group Hamas, is quite amazing despite the many ongoing non-stop terrorist attacks carried out on my fellow Israelis.

We Will Never Forget And Neither Should You

To finish off this Blog, I want to again remind readers of the two latest terrorist attacks on innocent Israelis who were viciously murdered by terrorists. Joe Manchin should seriously consider switching to the Republican Party given the failure of Democratic leadership to silence those members critical of Israel.

World Jewry must continue to raise their voices against not only the terrorists killing my fellow Israelis but all Jews wherever they may live. Perhaps the following videos will give you added incentive to do so-

Yehudah Dimentman

Yehudah Dimentman, 25, a father of one from the West Bank settlement of Shavei Shomron and a student at the Yeshiva in the Homesh outpost in the West Bank, was killed on Thursday evening (December 16, 2021) as he was leaving Homesh returning home from the Yeshiva. The car he was driving in was ambushed from the side of the road by Palestinian gunmen. Two other passengers in the car were injured in the attack.

He is survived by his wife and a 9-month-old infant. In a funeral attended by hundreds of mourners, he was laid to rest at the Har HaMenuchot Cemetery in Jerusalem on Friday (December 17, 2021).

The Palestinian terror groups Hamas, Islamic Jihad and Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine praised the attack, but did not immediately take responsibility for it.
