As I predicted and deeply hoped for, Joe Biden has selected Kamala Harris as his running mate. Not only is she the first Black US candidate VP but also the first Asian and the third female one. She loves breaking records. (More than ‘a victory for Black women,’ this is a triumph for America to continue the George Floyd momentum to rid the USA from systemic racism.)
For Biden, this is a cautious, comfortable, safe choice. They’ll make a fine team. But for Israel, she is the most extreme choice he could have made, meaning the safest. Israel bashing has been growing in popularity among Democrats, but she will have none of it, after fine Indian tradition.
Besides being a fierce and staunch fighter against injustice, she knows something that also the greatest opera singers mastered. To stand there and let crowds cheer and applaud you and pretend you like it, it feeds you.
Progressive US Jews are becoming increasingly torn about whom to vote for in 2020. Go for the vulgar bully, bigot, and supremacist who claims he loves Jews and Israel (but somehow not Jonathan Pollard) or a person who stands at the right side of history but was part of the Obama team that deeply betrayed the Jewish State? Not anymore. With Harris, we have an ally in the White House who will neither betray us nor shut up. Thank G^d.
BTW: To assume she’s pro-Israel because her husband is Jewish and not in her own right is simply sexist. Furthermore, it’s a mistake (and anti-Semitic myth,) to assume someone won’t be critical of but loyal to Israel because s/he’s Jewish. Do I need to remind you of Bernie Sanders and J Street?
I don’t know if Biden insured his platform doesn’t attack ‘the Occupation’ because he’s closer to Israel’s heart than his former White House boss, or on the advice of or to please Harris, or that the same pro-Zionistic stance that made him choose this policy also made him pick this running mate.
Donald Trump has only one option left to win from this ticket. To ask Nikki Hayley as his running mate. Two women from India for the penultimate highest office, both deep friends of Israel. Win-win (but one will lose).
Somehow, Trump always opts for the unforeseen and unpredictable. So I hereby recommend to him, pick Nikki. So he won’t. Reverse psychology. Trump will be unceremoniously carried out of the White House by the military, unable to resist because of bone spurs and a slippery ramp.
And the whole world will breathe a sigh of relief when a strategist enters the Oval Office, a diplomat who’ll reward friends and oppose opponents. And who will bring wars, including in the Middle East, further away from us. What’s truly good for Israel has always been the best for everyone.
