Law enforcement checks must be praised by suspects from other branches of power

It’s not enough to be angry and declare your innocence

Even if Netanyahu is right that his trials are a sham of ’10 years of idiotic press statements,’ I want him to add he’s proud that the Israeli police is independent enough to go after even the mightiest politicians.

Several people from the Prime Minister’s Office were accused of having leaked confidential information to help the Qatari government. (What is for sure is that leaks from the police investigation were all over the press for weeks.) But few said that the police must investigate such claims.

It turned out false alarm, but that doesn’t throw shade on the police work.

The editor-in-chief of the Jerusalem Post gets brutally interrogated on whether he was in any way a Qatari agent. I understand that it was emotional. Yet, his reaction was only about his innocence and the sacredness of the press. He should have added that if there was any suspicion, he was glad the police would try to get to the bottom of it.

A Member of Knesset gets interrogated on suspicion that he leaked confidential stuff. He was angry about it and called it politically motivated. Why didn’t he add that such a suspicion surely must be seriously checked?

I understand it’s only human to go on the defense or even counterattack. Yet, I expect influential people also to be able to rise above that and admit the value of powerful law enforcement against corruption and nepotism.

And yes, police abuse must be investigated too, but that’s a different issue.

The political branch cannot have the last word in everything. Politicians shall not be above the law, be corrupt, uproot democratic guide rails and legal safeguards, endanger the State, or kill human rights or international law, just for once having had enough votes at the elections.
