Let mainstream Orthodox Jews incorporate the Sigd holiday from Ethiopian Judaism
Fifty days after Yom Kippur, this year falls on November 20, 2025
Here we have it, an eloquent, written, English description of the ins and outs of the Sigd Holiday. Let me summarize with additions:
● Origin: The Book of Nehemiah, Chapter 9, which describes the renewal of the Covenant by the returnees to Zion.
● Meaning: Yom Kippur: individual repentance; Sigd: longing for collective improvement, unity, and national redemption.
● When: Fifty days after Yom Kippur, on the 29th of Cheshwan.
● Where: Today, the holiday is celebrated on the Armon HaNatziv Promenade, overlooking Jerusalem’s Old City and reminiscent of the high mountain in Ethiopia, and at the Western Wall Plaza.
● Who: Everyone is invited to come and prioritize unity.
● Mental preparations: Weeks in advance, similar to Shavuot.
● Actions: The day is divided into three parts.
● ● The first part: fasting (it’s also Yom Kippur Kattan!), devoted to soul-searching, climbing a high mountain symbolizing Mount Sinai, sometimes with a stone on one’s head as a sign of mourning and submission, and reciting prayers such as, ‘We have sinned, we have transgressed.’
● ● The second part: the renewal of the Covenant, reading from the Orit (the Torah) and reinforcing Jewish identity in the face of the danger of assimilation in the remote villages.
● ● And the third part, at midday: descending to the village and breaking the fast with honey bread as the start of a festive mitzvah meal.
● Integration: Many Ethiopian Jews have integrated the world’s Jewry’s religious practices meticulously. It’s our turn to honor some Ethiopian-Jewish traditions and profit from them.
We have adopted Chanukah and Purim, and no one disputes it.
Lag BaOmer bonfires and picnics have been adopted by some with a fervor as if Moses himself had commanded them.
Mimunah is celebrated as if Judaism can’t do without it.
More recently, Ashkenazic Jews have enthusiastically incorporated the Mizrachic traditional Rosh Hashanah Seder during the evening meals.
Almost no one frowns at Jews flocking to Uman for Rosh Hashanah.
We don’t need to wait for rabbinic ratification. That would come after the State and People have adopted it and the rabbis ended their sparred over details. As with all Minor Holydays, secular Jews may be the most on fire.
It’s not as if we don’t need collective improvement and unity. Maybe we can further affirm it by incorporating Israel’s Unity Day, the 1st of Siwan.
And just like we expect non-European Jews to identify with the Holocaust, it would be good when non-Ethiopian Jews feel what they went through.
There’s simply no excuse for not doing so but for shyness from Ethiopian Jews and uneasiness from the rest to accept them too as our teachers.

Like most of his readers, he believes in being friendly, respectful, and loyal. However, if you think those are his absolute top priorities, you might end up disappointed. His first loyalty is to the truth. He agrees that in a post-truth world, that's irrelevant, but then this is for the record. Chronologically, his most influential teachers are his parents, Nico (natan) van Zuiden and Betty (beisye) Nieweg, Wim Kan, Mozart, Harvey Jackins, Marshal Rosenberg, Reb Shlomo Carlebach, and, lehavdil bein chayim lechayim, Rabbi Dr. Natan Lopes Cardozo, Rav Zev Leff, and Rav Meir Lubin. This short list doesn't mean to disrespect others who taught him a lot or a little. One of his rabbis calls him Mr. Innovation [Ish haChidushim]. Yet, his originalities seem to root deeply in traditional Judaism, though they may grow in unexpected directions. In fact, he claims he's modernizing nothing. Rather, mainly basing himself on the basic Hebrew Torah text, he tries to rediscover classical Jewish thought almost lost in thousands of years of stifling Gentile domination and Jewish assimilation.
