Life Planning

He said to them, “Today I am 120 years old. I am no longer allowed to come and go before you, for God said to me, ‘You will not cross this Jordan River.’

If Moshe’s age explains why he can’t lead, then why mention that God said he won’t cross into Israel?

And if God’s decree is the reason, then why bring up age at all? And on top of that, the Torah later says Moshe’s strength had not weakened!

So what is he actually saying?

One way to read it is that Moshe is laying out three different perspectives colliding at once:

  1. Human perspective“I am 120 years old.” The clock ran out. No matter how great a leader, they all have a limit.
  2. Practical perspective“I can no longer come and go.” Leadership means that at some point, the role shifts, and you can no longer function in the same.
  3. God’s perspective“God said to me, you will not cross the Jordan.” Even if Moshe felt strong, even if he still had desire, God’s decree defines the boundary.

Put together, Moshe isn’t giving excuses. He’s teaching us how life actually works.

We are all navigating between three forces: time, circumstance, and God’s will.

We like to think life is just about setting goals and to keep pushing until we get there. But that’s rarely reality. Reality is when the pieces don’t line up. When the clock is still ticking, but the circumstances tie your hands. When you still have energy, but the door is closed. Or the opposite; the opportunity is wide open, but your own strength is gone.

Moshe is telling us that life will not be neat (as they say in corporate “the ducks don’t always line up in a row”) and the question is not “Why me?” but “What now?” How do I create meaning when the three forces don’t align?

We can’t waste life waiting for all the variables to cooperate. Rather we need to do what we can, when we can, based on what God places in front of us.

Shabbat Shalom!
