Literary Pogroms – A Prelude to a Holocaust

For years Goebbels’ pseudo-intellectual literary anti-Semitism not only justified and encouraged the Final Solution, but inspired its executioners who were rewarded with medals and promotions.

Also for decades, intermittent Soviet media campaigns against the Jewish religion, Zionism, and even Jewish secular institutions were accompanied by mass arrests and the deaths of tens of thousands of innocent Jews. The purges were so extensive that they partially depopulated the Jewish autonomous regions that even Stalin himself sanctioned. The perpetrators were also decorated and promoted.

By no means were the executioners, perpetrators, and quislings minor functionaries and exclusively of “Aryan”  origin. During World War II, Hitler promoted two of his generals (one a war criminal and both of Jewish origin) to the rank of field marshal, and even before this, the heads of Stalin’s gulag system were two brothers by the name of Berman. Also, the periodicals that instigated and supported anti-Jewish excesses were also not exclusively “Aryan.” Yiddish communist writers even justified the two Arab massacres that destroyed the ancient Jewish community of Hebron in 1929 and 1930. What motivated people of this character ranged from self-hate and aggrandizement to self-preservation.

Therefore, Kissinger’s Nobel Prize for dismantling Jewish settlements in the “far-off” Sinai, and the Rabin-Peres team getting the same trophy for trying to do the same thing in Israel’s heartland have the same historical precedent. Unfortunately,so does the mass media’s campaign of “Israel-bashing” orchestrated by people with Jewish names and even periodicals of Jewish interest and language. As in Hebron, it has encouraged and abated pogroms, turning discotheques, bat mitzvahs, seders, and busloads of women and children into scenes of carnage.

Thus, journalism, impervious to impartiality, with reporting based on hypothetical accuracy and facts derived by the monotonous recycling of lies until they are accepted as truths has been reward in Nazi Germany with a ministry, in the Soviet Union with a commissariat, and in Republican America with a Pulitzer Prize. This has enabled The New York Times to “out-Pravda” the truth and “Goebbelized” factual reporting into a literary pogrom.
