Miriam Adelson Lost!

For some reason, the Israeli media missed the fact that Miriam Adelson bought the Dallas Mavericks from Mark Cuban.  As a New York Knicks fan since my youth, the Boston Celtics were always a serious rival, but the fact that the Celtics beat the Mavericks in the NBA finals suddenly made me a Celtics fan.

After all, the Adelsons were the largest donors to Donald Trump’s previous presidential campaign.  And she is now conditioning support for his 2024 campaign on a commitment by him to promote the Israeli annexation of the West Bank.  That would be a catastrophe for Israel and for any prospect for a future Israeli-Palestinian peace.

So hopefully Adelson’s loss with the Mavericks will be followed by a Trump loss in November 2024.  Losses can be contagious.

It’s hard to believe that Miriam Adelson’s father was an active member in the left-Zionist Mapam party, whose daily newspaper Al Hamishmar had the slogan “For Zionism, Socialism and the Brotherhood of Nations” on its masthead.  She has clearly strayed very far from her father’s path.  This year we are celebrating the 100th anniversary of the death of Franz Kafka.  Can we imagine that one day, like in his classic novella “The Metamorphosis”, Miriam Adelson will one day wake up as a dove who supports Israeli-Palestinian peace? We can dream.
