MK Meir Porush’s shame

This past Wednesday, Israeli member of Knesset Meir Porush felt it necessary to write a letter to the US ambassador, Mike Huckabee. In his letter, after praising the US for its support for Israel he requested the ambassador’s assistance in imploring the government of Israel to stop arresting yeshiva students for avoiding military service.

Without repeating the details of the letter, I found it necessary to respond to MK Porush telling him how he had no right to ask the US to interfere in a sovereign nation’s internal affairs. In addition, he shamed himself and all Israelis by requesting that the US should participate in a violation of Israeli law. I told him that all able-bodied young men are obligated to serve in the army and he should know that as a Rabbi. The Torah specifically states that able-bodied Jewish men are obligated to join an army to protect the land and its people.

I also told him that he should, instead, be involved in encouraging yeshiva students to join the military NOT discouraging them. Apparently, the government of Israel is good enough to provide handouts to those yeshiva students but the students do nothing in return except protest.

The MK has managed to create a CHILUL HASHEM (desecration of God’s name) of the highest order and should leave the Knesset.
