Michael Charton

My Introduction and Why I am Here. You Can Thank October 7th for This.

I first learned about The Times of Israel from my Facebook friend Sarah Tuttle-Singer.  I follow her page daily.  Then, I saw the chance to have a blog and thought, why not?  (Don’t Jews always answer questions with another question?  That’s from The Joys of Yiddish).

October 7th, 2023 rocked my entire world.  As a Jew in the United States, I always saw myself as American first.  I was always proud of Jewish Culture and History, though I’m not observant.  My father was a prominent chemist.  He wasn’t ashamed of his Jewishness.  When we were in Rome, he looked at the Arch of Titus and said out loud, “I’m still here, where are you?” The way my mom put it to me was, he was a chemist first and the second religion may have been baseball.

I’ve never been to Israel.  I’ve been to Poland, but that is fodder for another post.  October 7th has made me think.  You would have thought with the Hamas attack, Israel would be the good guys.  Was I living a lie in this country?  I am sixty-eight years old now.  Heck of a time to come to that conclusion.

In many situations, my muse is Mark Twain.  You will get a jaundiced eye and sarcasm in most posts.  There will be a lot of this.  I wanted to begin with introducing myself and then I will discuss history current events and what I find from life, research etc.  Enjoy the ride.  There may be some turbulence.  I plan to have fun with this.  Have fun and comment.
