No One Passes the Purity Test

Scott Wiener wrote the laws. The movement he championed drove him from its own march.

Grace did my mother’s hair. She was in our home, in the ordinary traffic of the house, and no one thought there was anything to explain. She was trans. I did not meet that fact as a controversy. I met it the way a child meets the fact that some people are left-handed. Grace was normal. Grace was welcome. Grace was ours.

My mother kept gay and trans friends when the friendship cost her something. I kept Black friends in a country that had built an entire legal order to prevent it. Dignity in that house was not a slogan. It was furniture. You did not announce it. You lived inside it. It was completely normal for us.

So hear me precisely. I am a gay man. I have supported transgender people my whole life, without condition, as a settled truth I have never once needed to argue myself into. I did not arrive at it through a hashtag. I held it before the movement had its current flag, hashtags, or vocabulary. I hold it now.

Which is why I want to describe what happened to Scott Wiener, and why the people cheering it should be the ones most afraid.

On June 26, 2026, Wiener walked into San Francisco’s Trans March and was surrounded, screamed at, and driven out. Not by enemies of transgender people. By the movement itself. Wiener has authored some of California’s major transgender-rights laws, including the state’s transgender refuge law. The reward was a crowd trailing him through Dolores Park, chanting that they hated him, filming his face as he left in silence.

Here is the revealing part. Months earlier, Wiener had already surrendered. In January he recorded himself saying he believes Israel has committed genocide in Gaza. He said the words. He paid for them inside his own community. It changed nothing. The crowd that purged him either did not know he had confessed or did not care, because the confession was never the point. One of them shouted the real creed out loud: “You stopped being queer the moment you started supporting Israel.”

Read that again. A man’s identity, his belonging, his decades of work, revoked over his position on a foreign state. That is not a policy disagreement. It is a loyalty oath. And Wiener is not the first the march has eaten. It booed Mark Leno off its stage in 2016, a gay progressive who had given it years. It chased Mayor Daniel Lurie from the same event in 2025. The march now spends more energy expelling its friends than confronting anyone who actually wishes its people harm.

This is what a movement looks like when it stops trying to win and starts trying to purify. A coalition counts allies. A cult counts heretics. The coalition asks what you have done for it. The cult asks what you will confess before it lets you stay. I have watched this machinery before, aimed at Jews, and I named it then: the rainbow loyalty test that admits the Jew only after the Jewish meaning has been stripped from him. The test does not stop at the edge of the in-group. It never does. It works inward.

The march did not begin with Wiener. It began with the Star of David. At the Chicago Dyke March in 2017, three Jewish marchers carried rainbow flags marked with the Star of David, the Jewish Pride flag, and were thrown out for it. The stated reason was that the flags made other marchers feel unsafe. Organizers later explained that the problem was not Judaism but Zionism, and that antizionist Jews were welcome to stay. The Jew could remain once the Jewish meaning had been cut away. Two years later the District of Columbia Dyke March repeated the rule, restricting the Jewish Pride flag as a nationalist symbol while Palestinian flags moved freely through the same crowd. One nation’s banner was liberation. The Jewish one was a threat. The principle was set in those parks, years before it reached a state senator: belonging is conditional on subtraction. First the movement took the flag. Now it takes the man who wrote the laws.

A movement that installs a purity test does not get to choose where the test stops. History has answered that question before, more than once, and it answers it the same way each time.

Begin with France, because France wrote the manual. The Revolution promised liberty and built a guillotine. Then it began to feed. The Girondins went first, dragged down by men who called them insufficiently pure. The Hébertists, who had led that charge, followed within weeks. Then Danton, who had helped build the Revolutionary Tribunal, was fed to the Tribunal he built. Then Robespierre, the incorruptible, the man who had signed the others into the ground, climbed the same scaffold while the crowd that had cheered every prior execution cheered his too. Vergniaud saw it coming before they killed him and said it plainly: the Revolution, like Saturn, devours its own children.

The mechanism is the lesson. Each faction was destroyed by people standing one step to its left, who had discovered a purer standard the last purifiers had failed. There is no floor. Whoever administers the test today fails tomorrow’s, because tomorrow’s is always one degree stricter, and the only way to prove your purity is to find someone less pure and destroy him. The machine cannot idle. It has to keep eating.

Wiener is this march’s Danton. He helped build the thing. He wrote its founding statutes. When the new creed arrived, he recited it on camera. None of it mattered. The Tribunal does not acquit its architects. It convicts them first, because they are the ones who know where it came from.

Russia ran the same program with more paperwork. The Old Bolsheviks who made October were tried and shot by the state they made. Zinoviev and Kamenev confessed to crimes invented for them and were killed anyway. Bukharin confessed and was shot. The confession was never an exit. It was the receipt for a death already decided. And then the purest illustration of all: Yezhov, who ran the Great Purge, who signed the lists, who fed hundreds of thousands into the machine, was himself arrested, tried, and shot by it. The man who operated the engine was consumed by the engine. Faithful service bought nothing, because the standard moved every morning.

This is the shape of a cult that has lost its way. Not a movement with a goal, but a machine with an appetite. A coalition wins converts. A cult hunts apostates. The moment an organization spends more of its energy testing its own than persuading anyone else, it has stopped trying to change the world and started trying to purify itself. Purity has no end. There is always a more total version of it, one degree out of reach, and reaching for it always requires a new heretic.

The march found its universal test in a foreign war. I have set out the indictment of a movement that adopts the slogans of regimes that would jail or execute its own members, and the absurdity of activists who fall silent on the states that execute or imprison gay men while reserving their fury for the one country in the region where a gay man can live openly. They have made the Jewish state the password and the Jew the suspect. Wiener simply learned that reciting the password does not clear the suspect. Nothing clears the suspect. That was always the design.

Strip the slogans away and what remains is old. The demand that a Jew denounce the Jewish state as the price of belonging is the demand that Jews stay forever dependent on the goodwill of others, which is the exact condition Zionism exists to end. Jewish survival is not a bargaining chip. Jewish self-defense is not genocide. A movement that tells a gay Jew to choose between his people’s survival and his seat at the table has told him precisely what the table is worth.

Let me be personal, because this is personal. I have been a substantial donor to gay causes. I gave money, my time, and my name, for decades, because gay rights are not an abstraction to me. They are mine. I will never give another dollar. The line is not disagreement; anyone is free to disagree with me. The line is the moment my money and my labor began funding hatred aimed at me. That is where a person has to leave, and I have left. I will not finance my own exclusion. I will not subsidize a movement that has decided my survival is the one position it cannot tolerate.

There is a man worth remembering here, and the comparison is not a comfortable one. Mordechai Chaim Rumkowski ran the Lodz ghetto for the Germans. He believed cooperation was survival. He handed over what was demanded, and in the end he handed over the children, telling the ghetto that surrendering the few might save the many. He complied totally. He was murdered anyway, loaded onto a transport like everyone he had tried to buy time against. His compliance bought him nothing, because the people across the table had never offered a deal. They had offered a delay.

That is the warning inside the Wiener footage. He gave the mob its confession. He called Israel’s war a genocide, on camera, and paid for it among his own people. The mob ran him out of the park regardless, because the purity test was never a negotiation he could win. It was a delay, and the delay ran out. Appeasement does not buy safety from a machine that runs on accusation. It only tells the machine you can be moved.

A movement destroys itself from within when it forgets that distinction. When it learns to feed on its own, it does not grow stronger or purer. It becomes the French Tribunal, the Soviet dock, the ghetto council signing its own transport order. The only people who can stop it are the ones still inside it who remember what it was built to do. Grace deserved a movement that would protect her. This one is too busy devouring its founders to notice it has become the thing it was created to fight.
