It’s time to say what needs to be said because I am beginning to hear defenses of patent antisemitism from mainstream media these days in a way which gives rise to the rising tide of antisemitism across our country and now in our Congress. There are some new buzz words our there being used by so-called liberals and progressives that are fueling this as much as anything Trump says. One of the new tropes is potentially insidious and dangerous. I am hearing more and more from both the extreme left and the extreme right.
The so-called pundits are excusing patently antisemitic speech from Reps. Ilhan Omar, Rashida Tlaib and others by relying on the First Amendment and saying we have to have a “more ‘nuanced conversation’ about America’s relationship with Israel.” Let’s face it, the world’s got a Jewish Problem and every time this kind of approach has been taken, there have been proposals for a “final solution.” In 2019, the final solution is “from the river to the sea…” That is about as nuanced as Ilhan Omar, Rashida Tlaib and their supporters want to be. Make no mistake about it.
Remember, Hitler was elected democratically as have been these two representatives. Their supporters were wealthy entities committed to starting with “nuanced” conversations about mainline societies relationships with the Jews and moved on to dehumanizing, delegitimizing, devaluing and ultimately destroying Jewish life in Europe, as a starting pointing. What people forget is that they believed in an Aryan supremacy which would eventually come after all people not considered Aryan (“let’s allow immigrants from Norway and not ‘shithole’ countries in Africa and Latin America.”) As the Christian crusaders took out the non-believers and the Nazi’s took out the non-Aryans, so too do the new religious/ethno fascists seeking to rule our democracy with once again to root out the non-believers through demonization, dehumanization, delegitimization and destruction….the new world in 4-D. They are using our constitutionally guaranteed freedoms to call for the end of an important and fruitful alliance and the end of a tiny state, a homeland for Jews most of whom are there simply to escape persecution and build a civilization in what was once a desert and to live in peace with neighbors.
There is nothing that can be nuanced about having to daily defend from incoming rockets and terrorism, riots and incitement. There is nothing that can be nuanced in calling Jew-hatred exactly what it is. There is nothing nuanced about calling another well coordinated agenda to rid the planet of Jews exactly what it is. There is nothing nuanced about being concerned for principles of democracy being used to replace democracy with a government of tyranny. We have seen it before, we are seeing it again and the sirens are going off. Being nuanced only emboldens the threat. We need to be decisive and resolved to contain and eliminate the threat or everyone will pay dearly for the consequences.
