Democratic Germany managed to outlaw Holocaust denial.
That is not in contradiction with Free Speech but the protection of democracy, where each person is equally worthy.
Then, there is no good reason in the universe for the free West not to outlaw the denial of present-day systemic racism.
This denial is dangerous because, in the US, it’s now spreading like wildfire. And it legitimizes hatred and hate speech against anyone not Caucasian.
The only reason to have tolerance and patience for this kind of rejection of reality and bigotry is good-old classical murderous racism.
Make no mistake. If the noble Founding Fathers of the USA were able to hold slaves transported murderously across the ocean, then there are plenty of people around now who would just continue that half-a-millennium-old animosity and oppression.
And permissiveness and looking away by the rest is complicity.
Like cola and pizza, nothing stays local anymore. I know of three English Israel-focused right-wing Internet news outlets already spreading this kind of White supremacy gleefully.
Everyone is entitled to their opinion but not to alternative (false) facts.
Some White folks really don’t know much about the lives of non-Whites. Such ignorance is true for everyone designated as an agent of oppression. We need the oppressed to speak out and the Whites to listen. I can tell you: It can be touch. The guilt feelings can be numbing.
Therefore, White folks need to meet with other White folks to talk about how hard it can be to be an ally. Not to want to control the discussion. Not to see non-Whites as mere props in our comfortable bubble.
Whites need safe spaces. Not because we are oppressed as Whites. (Mistreated as White children we were, to make us ready to execute racism.) We need to cry about our shame. We need to cry about our guilt feelings. We need to share our small successes in discovering racism everywhere and standing up to it. We need to rediscover our memories of how we as small children were so ashamed of the racism of the White grown-ups around us that we didn’t want to be close to them – or anyone else who was White anymore. How we started idealizing non-Whites (how exotic they are). How we got so uncomfortable in our bodies that we couldn’t dance or excel in sports (statistically). That we got so lonely that only a sex craze seemed powerful enough to break our isolation.
Outlaw racism denial now. Tomorrow only costs more lives. Black lives. And more Souls of Whites. Only the truth can set us free.
