“Oy–What a Day I’ve Had Today!”

In the 1968 movie, “Funny Girl”, Barbra Streisand, as a cosseted new wife of Omar Sharif sang “Sadie, Sadie, Married Lady” as she put her hand to her forehead whining about her daily activities of lounging around and being adored.

As a result of President Trump’s extraordinary acts last week, Netanyahu, Israel and philo-Zionists everywhere can join Barbra in complaining about a surfeit of love.

What Trump did:

1. Proposed an out-of-the-box solution to the Gaza conflict that would ensure Israel’s security, prevent Hamas from remaining in power and giving Gazans a practical plan for rebuilding. He said Gaza, with its 25 miles of Mediterranean beachfront property should be the “Riviera of the Middle East”. (Internet wags are calling it “Mar-a-Gaza”.)
2. Achieved the release of additional hostages
3. Announced defunding of UNRAA, withdrewalfrom the World Health Organization and UN Human Rights Council.
4. Imposed sanctions against Iran and the International Court of Justice which had issued an arrest warrant against Netanyahu.
5. Released weapons and ammunition to Israel held up by the Biden Administration.

Zionists are in sugar shock.

Still, there are the occasional Trump Derangement Syndrome sufferers who threaten to put a pin in the balloon.

The other night, in a celebratory mood, I attended a performance of the acclaimed Irish Dance group, Riverdance.

In the lobby, prior to the performance, I asked one of the people in our group if she had gone to the recent inauguration. Her friend, a stranger, whipped around in disgust.

Okaay.

We entered the auditorium and took our seats.

The lights lowered and we watched a short promotional tourism video which featured Irish Dancers. It included an Asian (as the UKers like to say) young man, clogging away.

I was unable to appreciate the wild beauty of the landscape as the anti-Israel words of Ireland’s president, Michael Higgins over the past few weeks rang my ears.

“They should send a few thousand Palestinians to Ireland”, I whispered to my friend.

“And teach them dancing,” she added.

We laughed and I realized that in some small way, humor and a refusal to fall into defeatism has helped sustain the Jewish people throughout their history.

Despite everything, we still laugh and can appreciate irony.

Ask Barbra,

Well, not this one who threatened to leave the United States if Trump won the election, but the young one who had stars in her eyes and the drive to achieve whatever she wanted.

Like America and Israel themselves.
