Parashat Bereishit: The Open Loop (Songs from the Diaspora)

Songs From the Diaspora is a poetry blog focusing on the weekly Torah portion or other Jewish texts. This week, I consider some of the very first ideas presented in our portion; the notion of creation and a creator, as well as the idea of being created ourselves as we learn and read Torah.

Bereishit

In the first eye blink

the first letter

just forming as night

inked across day

the page, the pupil

Whether seen at five or fifty

That first creation-

a world summed in the lines of a single letter

an open loop

ever drawing,

the unknown before it

Declaring

this beginning is always

Beginning

the readers eye

Just now able to see

the light and dark of the page

the Weaver and the work
