Parashat Lech Lecha: The “Why” You Are Your Greatest Spiritual Master.
A magical characteristic of life is that even when you think your faith couldn’t possibly be stronger and is arguably the strongest in the world, it can still increase!
Everyone knows about the riots in Paris that started last Saturday October 17 2026, but did you know that the day after the initial riots was beautiful and sunny? And the people I saw in the streets looked peaceful and content!
This inspired me to say to myself, “Well, I’m going to go talk about Torah someplace very public and film something afterward about what is foremost in my heart at this moment.” And that’s exactly what I did in the last video I posted (see link below).
To me, spirituality is about focusing on what is already working. Sometimes people are very focused on what they shouldn’t do and why they shouldn’t do it, but in my writing and work, I discourage this kind of thinking. I do not give people a list of behaviors they should or shouldn’t do because that is focusing on the process, and I want people to be in the headspace of already being where they want to be – what I consider to be their most fulfilling spiritual state. Our greatest spiritual moments happen spontaneously, as when I made the aforementioned video.
The “how” is more beautiful than you can see, so focus on the “what” and expect to constantly see proof of the amazing symbiosis you have in your life. By knowing there is harmony with everyone and everything, you will get used to seeing an ever-increasing amount of harmony. I am working on a short video that will express this concept artistically. (You can subscribe to my YouTube channel to be notified when it is released.)
In Parashat Lekh Lekha, God promises Avram that his descendents will be as numerous as the dust on the earth (Genesis 13:16), and this is reiterated in the following parasha, when he is told they will be as numerous as the stars and the sands on the shore (22:17).
In my previous article and video, I talked about how to be your own greatest spiritual teacher by paying attention to your perceptions and beliefs here. In this video, I am also sharing one perception and belief that I find most powerful.
As you’ve probably figured out, my motto is, “It’s always better than I wished for!” because it allows me to really detach from what I specifically desire and just get genuinely excited to see what comes next. Maybe it also reminds me of my first book, which itself is a surprising result that I didn’t plan the details of. It’s more fun if we don’t know how the result will happen, and the exact form will increase our faith in God.
