Parshat Shelach – שלח

tzfas13wb2

נְּהִי בְעֵינֵינוּ כַּחֲגָבִים, וְכֵן הָיִינוּ בְּעֵינֵיהֶם
We appeared like “grasshoppers” in our eyes and that is how we appeared in their eyes (Numbers 13:31).

This was the paranoiac description (or political propaganda) by the Spies about the Giant inhabitants of the Land of Israel, trying to force the conclusion that we are demographically “too small” and without power to conquer it. Like everything in life, it depends how you read the map.

To be a grasshopper (I actually like better, James Joyce’s pun: Grace Hoper) has many advantages. It is able to jump high over obstacles and when united together as a swarm אחדות, as in the Plague of the Locusts, they can destroy all enemies, real and imagined.
