Perhaps it’s Time to Listen to Obama and Return the West Bank

Owning a PR agency, I am very aware of the importance of world opinion and public relations.  As one who supports Israel, perhaps it is time indeed on the eve of Passover that Israel relinquishes the occupied territories called the West Bank and improves favor in the eyes of the world.

What better time can there be than following the visit of the most powerful man in the world, Barack Obama, Israel’s new found-friend. As Obama told Israel and the world, settlement activity is not appropriate: “Given the demographics west of the Jordan River, the only way for Israel to endure and thrive as a Jewish and democratic state is through the realization of an independent and viable Palestine.”

Perhaps the reality is that the time has come to give up – how can 560,000 Israelis in the West Bank and East Jerusalem possibly survive when in a sea of Arabs as Obama, the United Nations, and many others constantly remind Israel?  As Netanyahu just apologized to Turkey, it’s an even better cherry on top and would indeed bring sweet relief to the region, right?

Indeed, let’s go a step further – There are 6 Million Jews in Israel and 300 Million Arabs amongst 22 states in the Middle East.  Israel is surrounded by countries that are that are 640 times her size and causes so much heartache for the world.  If Israel relinquished all of the land then there’d be no demographic problem, right? Because surely it’s the Jews causing tens of thousands to slaughter one another in Syria? Or surely it’s because of Israel that America has had such problems in the Middle East, right?

The reality is that nothing has changed – the region doesn’t want the Jewish State to exist.  And the age old argument hasn’t changed, no matter which American President comes to the region – regardless of their intentions. The real reality is that Israel’s control Judea and Samaria (the “West Bank”) is legitimate, fair and part of the Jewish nation.  Arabs called to destroy Israel in 1967, and Israel won a defensive war.

Israel has a right to the settlements. Even during Obama’s visit the Palestinian Arabs fired missiles at Israel.  Would miraculously peace appear if Israel gave in on the “West Bank”? Rubbish.

The reality is that there will be no change in the Middle East for many years.  The reality is that everyone lives better in the region because of the miracle called Israel – and the Jews ain’t going nowhere.

As Naftali Bennett the new Economy & Trade Minister of the Israeli government just said “a nation does not occupy its own land.” There are such things more important than good PR.

Chag Kosher V’Sameach, a Happy and Healthy Passover.
