Population Numbers and Silence

According to the 2017 Jewish statistics, there were 14,119,100 million Jews living in the world.

Of that number, 50% of the world’s Jews were living in the diaspora.

The 2017 Jewish population in the USA was 6,830,000.

In Canada it was 391,665

In Mexico it was 39,727

The total number of Jews living in North America was 7,261,392 million.

That represents an enormous number of silent voices. Silent because they make no impact upon the government of Israel which is more concerned for their political influence and financial support and contributions.

Almost three quarters of the total number are not Orthodox Jews. They are, if affiliated with any synagogues, mainly Reform and Conservative or Reconstructionist Jews. But Jews. Members of the Household of Israel who are deprived of recognition, of freedom of religious observances, of permission to pray unsegregated at the Wall in Jerusalem, and who are constantly slandered as not being Jewish by our Chief Rabbinate.

How will a Nation-State bill, if passed, affect them? How will it deter their goodwill to continue supporting a country which does not want them?

How can one continue to believe in the word of a Prime Minister who promises to build a prayer area for them at Robinson’s Arch and then backs down on his promise because the Orthodox have stated that they will topple his government if he keeps his promise to the unrecognized non-Orthodox Jews?

Does politics take precedent over promises?

Is it the Orthodox community which pours millions into Israel or is it the non-parasitical Jews of the non-Orthodox Jewish sects ?.

In ancient times we had Pharisees and Sadducees, Zealots, Hasidim (not to be confused with Hasidim today), Sycari, and the divisions of Hellenists, Samaritans and Karaites. We were not dismembered as a people or nation and we survived.

Non-Orthodox Jewish sects began in Germany in 1848 when the German states became unified and when German Jews were liberated from their ghettos. Secular education caused assimilation and with it, the “reformation” of traditional Jewish worship and practices.

In spite of all the challenges and opportunities in the new German society, the numbers of Jews who abandoned Judaism are much fewer than the numbers who retained their Jewish religion.

Diaspora Jews will not convert Israeli Jews and Israeli Orthodox Jews will not convert Diaspora Jews.

It must be a “live and let live” society, each worshipping our One and only God in the manner of personal choice.

I hope that the Nation-State bill as it is presently written, discriminating against non-Jews, Jews of color, Jews whose sexual orientation is frowned upon, in new communities and settlements to be built in Israel, will be defeated in a final vote in the Knesset.

Israeli society needs…requires… harmony, not havoc or hazadry.

A Jewish State for ALL Jews!
