“President Trump is a humanitarian with a big heart.”

No, it was not April Fools Day when White House press secretary, Karoline Leavitt, told this to reporters on July 31, 2025. It was in response to a question about why Trump sent his special Middle East envoy, Steve Witkoff, to Israel and Gaza to check out whether U.S. food aid was reaching the people who were most in need.

An appropriate follow-up question that no reporter had the courage to ask Leavitt was “How can you continue to lie and sacrifice your soul to a president who is exactly the opposite of how you just portrayed him?”

Does Leavitt and all the MAGA sycophants, including most members of the Republican Party, really believe these lies? What will they tell their descendants about how they responded during this critical time, and how will history judge them?

During the horrors of the Holocaust, the Nazi government very intentionally attempted to hide its actions against the Jews and others it considered Untermenschen (subhuman) and other enemies of the state. Trump and his followers, on the other hand, publicly display their inhumanity and proudly shout their lies through their bullhorn of misinformation.

So, let’s judge whether “President Trump is a humanitarian with a big heart” as he has:

Defunded the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) that could lead to over 14 million additional deaths by 2030, including 4.5 million deaths among children under 5.
Placed young children literally in cages away from their undocumented immigrant parents; demonized and stereotyped primarily Black and Brown immigrants from our southern border, and has proposed virtually no immigration reform except harsh penalties such as family separation, arrest, and deportation without due process of law.
Implemented significant cuts and policy changes impacting scientific and medical research, particularly through reductions to the National Institutes of Health (NIH), the National Science Foundation (NSF), and on universities of research on such diseases as HIV/AIDS, cancer, Alzheimer’s Disease, new and improved vaccines, climate change and environmental justice, LGBTQ health, and women’s health.
Cut or significantly reduced funding for renewable clean energy technologies, specifically solar and wind powered projects, ended subsidies and tax credits for the manufacture and purchase of these projects, and cancelled projects and awards for clean energy technologies such as carbon capture and electric vehicle initiatives; and instituted its “Drill Baby Drill” agenda with no limits on fossil fuel extractions and emissions, mining, and deforestation.
Reduced Medicaid and Food Assistance funding through the ironically named “Big Beautiful Bill,” totaling more than $1 trillion over the next decade leading to an estimated increase of 10 million uninsured people.
Attacked political opponents, the media, immigrants, marginalized communities, the judicial system, and an entire continent. (“Crooked Hillary” Clinton, “Lyin’ Ted” Cruz, “Little Marco” Rubio, “Sleepy Joe” and the “Biden crime family,” Rosie O’Donnell as a “fat pig,” a “slob” and an “animal”; “the fake news,” “the lying press,” trans woman as “men in dresses,” “shithole nations,” mocked a reporter with a disability, and the list is too long to continue here).
Ended reproductive choice in many states through Trump’s Supreme Court picks, imposed a total or partial ban on reproductive healthcare by defunding Medicaid reimbursements to women’s health clinics.
Demonstrated a slow and deadly response to public health emergencies with little or no trust in science but, rather, promoted dangerous conspiracy theories.
Shown no substantial support for paid parental leave or subsidized national childcare plan, no elder care plan, and massive tax breaks for the already-super rich and for corporations.
Instituted banning books and other curricular content in public schools, wants to provide a voucher system of public funding to private schools, some of which are parochial, plus plans to abolish the Federal Department of Education, which will seriously reduce funding for special education programs.
Demonstrated little support for marriage equality and the institution of a possible process to pass a Constitutional amendment defining legal marriage as only between “a man and a woman.”
Vilified and scapegoated transgender people, no support for transgender choice in their use of public accommodations and healthcare, including gender affirmation care.
Continued tearing down of a supposed wall separating “Church & State” in its Project 2025 agenda to install a patriarchal heteronationalist Christian white supremacist theocracy.
Instituted policies to abolish the Consumer Protections Agency.
Attempted to abolish labor unions to take away collective bargaining, with no establishment of a livable minimum hourly or yearly wage.
Promoted “America First” agenda by remaining resolute to retreat from the North Atlantic Treaty Organization, and the Paris Climate Accord, with very little support for the work of the United Nations, the World Health Organization, and little support or actual retreat from U.S.’s current treaty obligations.
Instituted random tariffs to countries throughout the world, which will increase already high consumer prices having the greatest impact on lower wage earners.
Initiated virtually no policies for police reform other than even harsher treatment by officers of the people they are meant to serve, increased privatization of the prison system by for-profit corporations, and giving almost unlimited power to Trump’s Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officers.
Proposed few but insignificant firearms restrictions while making it easier for residents to buy more guns.
Continued work to rig elections in its favor by refusing to limit state gerrymandering of voting districts, supported reducing the number of voting days, limiting or eliminating mail-in ballots and ballot drop-off boxes, and cried “fraudulent” elections unless Republicans are the winners.
Killed Mr. Roger, The Cookie Monster, Masterpiece Theater, and other shows by defunding the Corporation for Public Broadcasting.
And we can continue to add to this list ad infinitum.

Democrats, the press, and We the People must tell our stories, the highlights as well of the issues we need more time to improve.

We must tell the truth and unmask the lies and deceit that Trump and MAGA Republicans expose whenever they open their mouths.
