Publicizing the Miracle, Illuminating Our Future

May we proudly share our light this Chanukah (Credit: Masha Manapov)

On the first night of Chanukah, millions of Jews around the world draw back their curtains and place a menorah on their windowsill for all to see. Passersby witness this quiet yet powerful broadcast of faith and hope—an expression woven deeply into the Jewish spirit.

The menorah, with its ancient and sacred design, stands on its sturdy base, its straight spine lifting our tradition upward. Its branches arc in perfect symmetry, while the shamash, the central helper candle, rises with steadfast resilience. Each flame, kindled to match the night of Chanukah, glows from behind the glass as if declaring, “Here I am. Here I stay. Here I will continue to shine,” just as Jewish National Fund-USA says: “We were there yesterday, we are there today, and we will be there tomorrow.”

Pirsumei nisa—“publicizing the miracle”—is the mitzvah that inspires many to place their menorah in full view during Chanukah. This Festival of Lights celebrates both liberation and wonder: the Maccabees reclaiming the Temple, and the oil that was meant to last one day but miraculously burned for eight. To display a menorah publicly is to proclaim perseverance. It reminds us, and the world, that despite unimaginable trials, the Jewish people have survived through both miracle and determination—and that we will always bring light to darkness.

Just as we are called to publicize the miracles of Chanukah, we are also called to proudly celebrate the miracle of the land of Israel—our Jewish homeland. The rebirth of the Jewish nation after centuries of dispersion and persecution stands as a testament to courage, endurance, and an unwavering refusal to let our light go out. As boldly as we place our menorahs in our windows, we must affirm our Zionism to friends, neighbors, and family. Share why you openly express your connection to the land and people of Israel. Explain why you choose to invest your time, passion, and resources—whether through Jewish National Fund-USA or another meaningful organization—in strengthening our eternal homeland. And inspire others to do the same.

This Chanukah, as we set our menorahs aglow and let their light reach outward, let us honor both the ancient miracles that shaped our past and the modern miracles we are building today. Jewish National Fund-USA is working to secure a future in which the radiance of Chanukah shines throughout Israel—from North to South. In that future, windows in every corner of the country—from revitalized frontier towns to new communities and long-established cities—will broadcast the enduring Jewish story of hope and resilience, from the Maccabees to our own time and beyond, to the future.

May we remember that with vision, perseverance, and faith, we can kindle light in even the darkest moments—and help it shine across the land of Israel for generations to come.
