According to the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance, which holds that “denying the Jewish people their right to self-determination, e.g., by claiming that the existence of a State of Israel is a racist endeavor” is antisemitic, the United States’ main opposition party just elected its first antisemitic politician. And the response? Joy and optimism. As a matter of fact, according to politico, Rashida Tlaib “represents the most logical path for the left to claim its seat at the table, both within the Democratic Party and in national politics”. It’s not only joyous, it’s the future of progressive thinking.
The current Democratic party platform was published in 2016 and its largest section is dedicated to combatting prejudice, including antisemitism. It also endorses a two-state solution to the Israel-Palestine conflict. Clearly, the platform’s antiquated ideas about two states and opposing antisemitism are not progressive enough for Congresswoman Rashida Tlaib, based on her recent interview with Democracy Now’s Amy Goodman.
In a long and jumbled response to a question about her support for a one-state solution (code for eradicating the Jewish state), Congresswoman Tlaib made this bizarre statement:
“The majority of them [Israelis], thinking that maybe we could have a two-state solution, maybe that’s the direction that many of them want and if that’s what they want then that’s their right to self determine and to gain that.”
Congresswoman Tlaib continues,
“But what I could tell you is what I know, looking at real American history, separate but equal doesn’t work, we tried it.”
This isn’t difficult to interpret. To Democratic Congresswoman Rashida Tlaib, supporting Jewish self-determination, a two-state solution, or a state of Israel in any form is equal to supporting the segregated American south where racism was institutional and legal.
The wider implication of this association is very sinister. Rashida Tlaib is linking Israel, a democratic Jewish state, with racism, an evil that must be combatted. To Americans, especially, racism is not something that could be dealt with to any degree. Wherever it’s identified, it must be rooted out and destroyed. Therefore, what are we to do with this pesky, racist state of Israel? The answer is obvious: the Zionists and their state cannot be redeemed because they are innately evil. They must be eliminated.
The nazis linked the Jew with Bolshevism; Rashida Tlaib is linking the Jewish state with racism.
If this is the future, I wonder, what will the 2020 Democratic party platform say?
