Rep. Steve Israel To Replace Giffords On Holocaust Council
Rep. Steve Israel (D-L.I.) has been appointed to serve on the United States Holocaust Memorial Council in Washington, D.C. He replaces Rep. Gabriel Giffords (D-Ariz.), who resigned Jan. 25 to concentrate on recovering from wounds sustained in an assassination attempt a year ago.
House Speaker Nancy Pelosi made the appointment, and also renewed the appointment of Rep. Henry Waxman of California as the other Democratic House member on the council.
Before being elected to Congress, Israel served from 1998 to 2000 as president and CEO of the Institute on Holocaust and Law at Touro Law Center. He previously served also as director of the Suffolk office of the American Jewish Congress.
